This review is from: Definitive Transatlantic Collection (Audio CD)
John Renbourn is one of those few performers who has never put out even a mediocre, much less poor, solo album. It helps that he is one of the best finger-pickers now active, but more than this, his is a style of play that is so fresh and vibrant that his treatment of just about any material that might come to hand cannot help but please the ear. On this basis I'm not sure that I would call this the "definitive" Transatlantic years collection, as one could easily come up with a second program of equal length that is nearly, if not entirely, as good. But then again, this is not exactly *bad* news, is it? The real choice is whether you want to go with such compilations, or stick with the individual albums. Tough choice, except possibly to the extent that the compilations often have considerably longer programs.
