You've been 'Unhallowed'; you've survived the 'Miasma', you lived 'Nocturnal'; now, get ready to 'Deflorate',

The album begins with great haste and the style you've grown to love about the Black Dahlia Murder; the first track, "Black Valor" is a familiar track but nonetheless brutal. We then proceed to the single, "Necropolis" which has a catchy, repetitive melody that builds up with the song and thrown in is a nifty solo from the new guitarist, Ryan Knight. This track absolutely has that 'party vibe' to it we know the band has, but never loses the death-edge they also maintain. Trevor's vocals are definitely a highlight to the album, while you would think of him as an addition to the instruments, Trevor holds his own on this album, and you hear it. The shrieking sounds the same as the last two albums, however, it is his monstrous bellow thats taken "fine-tuning". You can actually make out damn near every word he roars out; he's enunciated his vocals and it absolutely works. The album never slows, and keeps a steady rhythm, but you can tell the songs apart giving each track it's own identity(and easy to pick out your favorites)-destroying any notion of a "one-track album"-something they've receieved criticism for but means nothing to the fans..
You will hear all the Carcass/At The Gates influences; all the thrashy, melodic black hardcore metal throughout the 10 tracks. "Chirst Deformed", an incredible song, has a breakdown midway through with Trevor belting out a punk-ish, hardcore chant that'll make you want to pump your fist. The last track, "I Will Return", begins with a solo reminiscent to Lamb of God's guitar work then explodes into a speed metal warzone with a damn catchy melody to it with a blast-beat backed chorus; most definitely a catalog favorite.. Every aspect of the album is top notch, the band, vocals and production. The record, again, has only ten tracks(as with their other albums)-clocking in a little over a half hour, but as we say with a few other things in life, "quality not quantity". While 'Deflorate' doesn't break any new ground(for the genre anyways), it's definitely a step in the right direction for the band and will help acknowledge them as one of America's better metal acts. Definite buy. **4.5 stars outta 5**

Not quite the masterpiece Nocturnal was.,

I started listening to TBDM with Unhallowed, and have been a huge fan since. Nocturnal is probably my favorite album
from the last three years, so this cd had an unreasonably high bar set to reach for me. The cd stands fine on it's on merits, and if you like TBDM you already know what you're getting here. The new lead player's solo's are kind of hit and miss for me. The real problem is the album just has no identity to me. One listen to Nocturnal, and you knew which songs were your favorites. There are few less stand out songs on this album. The album also comes with a DVD showing the band travel to a few places outside the states on tour. It's fun to watch them goof off, and at the menu you can also select drums. Drums shows you the main parts of about 4 songs on the album with the drummer alone. It's a great thing for drum players, and you'll have a newfound respect for a guy who has to keep that pace for more than an hour on a regular basis. If you like TBDM, you'll like Deflorate. It's not the masterpiece Nocturnal was, but it is still the best metal album you're going to get this year. 4/5

This is a great album for what it is. The instrumentation is brilliant. The songs as a whole are enjoyable when the mood strikes, however there is just one problem. It's a pretty big one...there is nothing remotley original about this album.
Deflorate sounds so metalically generic that it is painfull to listen to as it feels like I've already heard this all before, and a hundred different times at that. Come on boys....

I didn't really know what to think when I purchased Deflorate and be quite honest I was a little nervous. Whenever bands get a new guitarist the band usually changes its sound completely and it's never the same. So, is not the case with Deflorate. Ryan Knight (from Arsis) is a welcomed addition to the band in every way possible. He really stepped up the solo's in precession and technicality all while not taking away from the reoccurring theme of John's solo's Ryan really bridged the gap to still make the music flow. The new songs might take a little getting used to but all in all the music is still brutal and amazing. Trevor has also reached a new high on this album as his screaming and guttural grows get better as does his lyrics and his timing. Shannon's drumming however is not what I would thought it would be it terms of complexity but it still gets the job done. I would say that overall this album is not lacking it's still fast paced and a good addition to their catalogue of music. This CD isn't Nocturnal nor should it be but it definitely stands on it's own and will be welcomed addition to your music collection. Pick this album and you won't be disappointed.

Being one of the greatest American death metal bands out there and releasing the absolute classic that Nocturnal was it must have been hard to try and record an album that would still be able to gain success and keep TBDM on top. The sound of Deflorate is a bit different then Nocturnal, but its a nice change, something new and exciting but still keeping their same roots, just adding to the greatness making them even more unique. Lyrically they haven't changed much but it's still absolutely genius.. fans will know what to expect lyrically. I think there's more variety and diversity in these songs. Every song is a bit different. I really enjoyed track "I Will Return" and thought it was a great change and clearly influenced by early Swedish black metal. There are some really brutal and great songs here, if you're a fan of TBDM there's no reason why you won't enjoy this. It may not have surpassed Nocturnal but it is right up there for sure. Oh and BTW the guitar solo's just get better and better, they are nasty on this album.

This is a very well executed album. Extremely technical, groovy at times, melodic when it was called for, and just plain fun to listen to. It reminds me a bit of Necrophagist, and Human Abstract, and that isn't a bad thing at all. The Black Dhalia Murderer isn't going to go quietly into the night, and they'll take you with them, screaming the whole way down to hell.

TBDM is at the forefront of the American Death Metal scene. They've proved themselves over and over and over again that they have better chops, better endurance and better minds than most of the 1000s of Exteme Metal bands that are being signed and unleashed on the world. They've released back-to-back shredding masterpieces, and Deflorate is no different. From the very first note this CD does NOT let up, and it really does inspire a great, great energy from within. 'Impressive' and 'Unbelievable' aren't good enough words to describe the talent that these guys have. However, the reason that this CD ain't 5 stars is because we have heard it before. Their first two releases were amazing because they weren't doing anything "new", but they were really raising the bar when it came to the genre. More intensity and more power without sacrificing sound. And one of the things I really enjoyed about Nocturnal was that it had this dark, melodic undertone to it that really captured me, and that was a very good step for them to not just make three of the same record in a row. The songwriting and lyrical prowess really made me feel like I was part of what I was listening to. Deflorate makes me feel more like I'm duct-taped to a chair and each of the band members are force-feeding me hate and fear and loathing with a really jagged spoon. And that's after they kick my teeth in with steel-toed boots covered in hooker intestines. Which, don't get me wrong, is awesome. BEYOND awesome. I love having my mind blown, but it was a tiny step back for them I think. Could they have done better? I don't know, this record is pretty much flawless in it's "metal-ness". As a Death Metal record, it's untouchable in it's speed and complexity and execution. Is it their BEST work? We'll see in a few years when they've all been taken back to hell and all that's left is their Satanic Majesty! You won't regret buying this CD, but if you can, pick up a copy of Nocturnal as well if you haven't already.

BDM has brought back an older, raw, and more organic sound. Coupled with their skill and style they have progressed so well in, through out the years.
The album opens with an epic, fast paced assault on the senses, called "Black Valor". Which includes very brutal, yet melodic verses and chorus. As the album began, and much like the previous two albums ended. BDM brings the album home with another epic, fast-paced, juggernaut, filled with melodies.. A some what epitaph, called "I will return". The songs and album are short. Leaving the listener wanting more!!!

I wasn't too amazed by this album after listening to it only a couple times. After listening to it more and more, it grew on me and I appreciate the songs a lot more now. These guys are really talented and it's a shame they get lumped into the whole "core" scene thing. The dvd it comes with is pretty cool, funny guys.

Got into these guys not too long ago with Nocturnal. Then I got Deflorate. IMO Deflorate is the better of the 2 albums. Very brutal and melodic/catchy at the same time. Not many bands can do this as well. If anyone wants to leave me a comment about their early albums go ahead and let me know which ones to get.
