I couldn't help but notice that all the reviews here are with users who recently treated their decks. Let me tell you, a stain/sealer has to be REALLY bad, if it doesn't look good in the first couple of months it's been applied. What sets them apart is what happens a year or two down the road.

Amazing. I was a bit hesitant to purchase since it was a bit more expensive than other stains out there, but.....after staining my very old, almost never been protected, very grey and very dry deck, I'M SOLD!! My deck looks like a nice piece of furniture. I never thought it possible. On the down side, it repels water SO much, it may seem a little bothersome because the rain 'pools' and remains there for a while...a small price to pay. I also had to purchase many more gallons than expected. I'm thinking that was because MY deck was SO very dry it heavily absorbed the product. Again, it will be worth the price IF it performs as advertised and lasts a couple of years. Time will tell. Another little bit of info: I put it on one of my greying, dry cedar shakes and it clearly conditioned and turned it golden brown.

I used this product to seal my decks two years ago here in San Francisco (not the harshest in climates). Yes, it looked absolutely stunning for the first year. I was told that this stuff was so good, it would last up to 4 years (this was from a dealer in Michigan). Well, it's been two years and in areas where there is little to no foot traffic, but gets morning sun exposure, the stain is simply deteriorating away down to raw wood. The areas that get no sunlight are still fairly acceptable. The problem is, and why I would strongly NOT recommend this product, you can't touch it up like you would with an oil based product!!! You have to completely strip it ie., sanding, scraping, washing before you can retreat it. You're not supposed to "touch up". If I would have done this with an oil based stain/sealer, it would have lasted just as long, looked just as good, would have cost less, and I could easily just touch up the areas that are getting more wear. To make my point even more clear, my next door neighbor refinished her deck at the same time using an oil based product, and the same sun exposed surfaces on her deck are in much better shape than mine. Stick with a premium oil based product. You'll be much happier you did in the long run...

Hello ~ This past week I stained a brand new con-hart redwood deck with the Defy Extreme Pine Stain. The visual result were stunning.
However, I am sad to report that 2 days after it was stained we had a light rain and a major issue developed. The water did indeed bead up perfectly on the deck, but as it evaporated it left leopard spots and water stains over a majority of the surface area of the deck.

I called the manufacturer (SaverSystems) and to their credit they immediately called me back and requested photos, which I sent. Within an hour a 'chemist' called me back and said he felt the spotting was due to acid rain (I live in LA, so it could be plausible). However, not ALL of the deck spotted and stained - so the acid rain explanation doesn't quite solve everything.

The chemist relayed to me to wash the entire surface of the deck with Dawn and water and that would remove the spotting and stains. It did remove some of the stains, lightened others and had minimal effect on some. I was disappointed.

I am willing to admit in my haste and thinking it was fresh wood, that i that I did not use their cleaner and brightener before the staining process and indeed this could be part of the problem as they relayed if the PH of the wood is off it may not take the stain properly.

As of now the deck is still spotted and stained to some degree and the only recourse I will have is to remove the stain via sanding or chemical and restain the entire surface

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the price, September 26, 2010

The stain has only been on our deck for a few weeks, but so far I have been very happy with the product. The stain went on easily and the color looks beautiful. It is nice to be able to see the wood grain under the stain. I was able to apply it in half the time with a more even finish with a roller, but I ended up using more product than I thought I would. I would like to give it a 5-star, but I will wait to see how the stain wears on our deck.

this is great product although make sure you read the instructions first! I didn't and assumed it went on like other products. The second coat has to go on before the first coat dries. The product looks great and was very easy to apply and clean up.

As most have stated, looked great for first 6 months, gone at 1 year. Just finished cleaning and stripping the remaining sealer. Stick with an oil based stain/sealer. We are trying ReadySeal this year based on on-line reviews.

This product surprised us. It's an excellent product true to the reviews I read regarding it. Deck looks stunning. We used Defy wood cleaner with powerwasher first. Will recommend to others.
