Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Brown, a management consultant, presents a smart and readable guide for executives seeking to improve the effectiveness of their corporate strategies. Even though one-third of all business strategies fail, executives tend to stick with the plan, maintaining that a bad plan is safer than no plan at all. Brown shows how to break free from this mentality and makes her message stick with energetic prose and cheeky humor. She questions prevalent corporate beliefs and shows how following these misguided approaches can ruin an organization. She highlights change as the key factor; it's the "anti-gravity" that will propel a company forward. Citing such successful examples as Nu Skin and Southwest Airlines, Brown illustrates key points on what works and what doesn't, and concludes each chapter with a helpful summary. A new voice in a very crowded field, Brown provides an original perspective on corporate growth.

-Rieva Lesonsky, Small Biz Daily

Defy Gravity: Propel Your Business to High-Velocity Growth is not a book you read, it’s one that you devour. True to her name, Rebel talks about challenging businesses to think differently and continuously reconsider long ingrained beliefs to respond to the needs of today’s situations. 5.0 out of 5 stars The Status Quo... Isn't September 26, 2010
Format:Hardcover
Excellent Read!

Rebel is a refreshing voice in a sea of regurgitated business rhetoric. Change is constant. As such, we need innovative frameworks that reshape our thinking about the status quo, change, our legacy assumptions and strategy. Rebel steps in to the intersection of flight and business strategy and shares a metaphor that challenges our suppositions of the past, present and future.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE Business Book of 2010 September 28, 2010
Format:Hardcover
I almost hesitate to call this the best business book of 2010. I hesitate only because it may just be the best book of any kind, period. The business principles discussed by Rebel are very sound but so many of the concepts apply to our personal lives as well. I cannot imagine anyone who wouldn't benefit from this book.

There are many great books out there with similar content, and most are about as enjoyable to read as watching paint dry. What truly sets Rebel Brown's Defy Gravity apart from the pack is the ease with which it reads. With every example, every point and every story it's like having a close friend sharing their experience with you. This book is alive with powerful insights into what it takes to succeed in a world where gravity holds us down. It's a great title because if you follow Rebel's advice it's hard to imagine anyone not breaking the bonds of gravity to excel in whatever they do.

If it sounds as if I really like this book, you are wrong; I really love this book. I've read it twice and I'll read it again, I'll buy it for the people I care about and I'll suggest it to my business associates. I recommend it to you today. It is simply too good a book not to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Are YOU ready for lift off September 14, 2010
Format:Hardcover
Because this book will certainly get your engines revved up! The author opens with astute examples that prove "if you do what you've always done you'll always get what you've always had" is NOT true. In fact, if you do what you've always done you'll lose momentum and encounter drag that will pull you down to earth and into a rut. This brilliant (and funny) collection of wisdom proceeds right on to instructions and examples for how to "defy gravity" and move your business (and you can so easily apply it to ALL aspects of your life) onward and UPward!
