Book Description

August 1, 2005
Every class has a range of students from those who are always cooperative to those who predictably fight the teacher for control every step of the way. In the most challenging classes, this oppositional and defiant student is on the verge of preventing him/herself and many of other students from focusing on learning.

This book will help the classroom teacher find effective ways to avoid disruption and increase cooperation from the most resistant students. As you begin to understand the underlying causes and dynamics of opposition, you will be able to develop additional strategies that will lead to increased classroom success and satisfaction for both the defiant student and the teacher! Parents will also find this book helpful for providing insights that are both useful at home and at school.

More About the Author

Jerry Wilde is a professor of educational psychology for Indiana University East. Prior to this academic appointment, he spent years working with students who had emotional, behavioral, and learning difficulties. It was through his experiences with children and families that he learned the skills and techniques included in his books. His experiences with his own health problems have reinforce his beliefs about the nature of emotions. After experiencing kidney failure and being on dialysis, he was fortunate enough to receive a kidney transplant. However, he recenlty developed cancer in his transplanted kidney and will soon be back on dialysis. Through it all, Jerry remains optimistic and stubbornly refuses to let these difficulties change his outlook on life. Other than psychology, the great loves of his life are his family, the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Minnesota Twins, and Diet Mt. Dew. He can be contacted at jwilde@indiana.edu

This book contains tons of tips and intervention strategies to assist in working with the "hard to work with" child. Definitely appreciated the great wealth of information and found a way to incorporate the information into my line of work!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good advice but too scattered, May 3, 2011

This review is from: Defying the Defiance (Perfect Paperback)
This book gives good information and advice about defiant children and the way to handle and help them at home and at school. Good help for parents who are new in the field and good ideas for teachers in their daily work at school. My main reluctance is that I found it very scattered, with little unity and a lot of repetition. I suggest you look for: "Your Defiant Child" and "Your Defiant Teen" by Barkley for a more structured and profound apprach Your Defiant Child: Eight Steps to Better Behavior.

3.0 out of 5 stars So so, March 3, 2007

This review is from: Defying the Defiance (Perfect Paperback)
This may be more suited for a teacher who is open to learning how to best deal with the ODD child, and teaching skills to help all of their students. Otherwise, I didn't get that much insight and stratergy from the book. It should have been generalized to all those who may encounter the ODD child, and concepts more readily accessible.
