Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

"Johnnie Moore has courageously focused on one of the most alarming and heart rending crises of our time. He bears witness to the war against Christianity which is being waged with horrific brutality by an evil opponent. Every American should read this and demand our government stand up against barbarism."
Newt Gingrich
Former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives

"This is an important book written by a competent voice at a critical time. Johnnie Moore has become one of the world's leading spokesperson for Christians in the Middle East. When most of the world didn't know about our plight - much less care - he raised his voice.  Johnnie Moore, has shown in action that we are family with the suffering church. He has come with us in our suffering and pain.Even more than, he came to our rescue. I hope millions read this book, and care enough to act."
The Reverend Canon Dr. Andrew White
Chaplain, St. George's Anglican Church
Baghdad, Iraq
frrme.org

"In the summer of 2014, ISIS terrorists stormed into Iraq's ancient Christian center and unleashed a genocidal jihad that exiled or killed every Christian man, woman and child and laid waste to some of Christianity's earliest churches.  Half a world away, Johnnie Moore got on a plane and rushed to the region to help.  In this book, he relates accounts of the survivors he met - first hand stories that give vivid testimony to a powerful  Christian love that prevails against satanic violence straight off a Hieronymus Bosch canvass. This primer also draws links between  Christian martyrs of today's Middle East and those of 1st century Rome and ends with a warning to a complacent West. Every Christian in America should read it, and then help the persecuted."
Nina Shea
Director of Hudson Institute's Center for Religious Freedom

"Johnnie Moore has been consistently sounding the alarm and seeking to awaken the church in the West to the existential threat that ISIS poses to Christians in the Middle East and beyond.  His timely book underscores the urgency of confronting this evil."
Rep. Frank Wolf
Distinguished Senior Fellow
21st Century Wilberforce Initiative

"I thank God for Johnnie Moore and for this important book. If Christians do not wake up to this demonic evil and take action against it, God will hold us accountable. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, 'Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.'"
Eric Metaxas,
New York Times Bestselling author of Miracles and Bonhoeffer.

"This is possibly the most important book of the year. It is not just timely and relevant--the subject makes that so--it is heart-breaking and spirit-inspiring. Written with journalistic passion, historical nuance, and Christian conviction, Moore's book doesn't need to elevate these modern martyrs to sainthood, he merely shines a light on the reality of their plight. In doing so you realize they are the most tangible, gripping examples of the Gospel of Christ's love in our day."
David Drury
Chief of Staff
The Wesleyan Church International Headquarters

An excellent book giving all who pray insight into the need of Middle-Eastern Christians. It is time to rise up and act America! Before it's too late we must pray and help those devastated by this evil. The perdition of ISIS is a given. What will it cost?

Everyone should read this book. Besides enumerating the atrocities committed by ISIS, it points out the difference between ISIS and most Muslims. After reading Defying ISIS, the next step is to take action somehow to support the Christians in Iraq and Syria. It sounds like something out of the Middle Ages, but it's all happening today wherever ISIS is, not just in Iraq and Syria. I urge you to read Defying ISIS.

For those who care about what's happening to Christianity in Iraq and Syria this a eye opening reality to what monstrosity that exists, and is coming here, if it hasn't already.

A Christian holocaust? A group dedicated to eliminating Christianity altogether? It sounds extreme and impossible, but that is the vision of ISIS. In Defying Isis: Preserving Christianity in the Place of Its Birth and In Your Own Backyard, Johnnie Moore sounds the alarm: Christians, ISIS wants you dead.

Moore points out that the territories where ISIS is most active, parts of Iraq and Syria, played an important role in Old Testament history and in the early growth of Christianity. I often focus on the sites of Jesus' ministry as the land of the Bible, and then I think of Christian expansion primarily to the west. Moore reminds us of the history of the people of Israel, and points out that in the first half of Christian history, the eastern church was in many ways stronger and more advanced than the church in the West.

These historical reminders are important, but more important are the stories of Christians facing unutterable evil under ISIS. Our brothers and sisters in Christ face a choice: convert or die. Many are being martyred in a manner no less evil than the Nazi persecution of the Jews. And like the Nazis, the ISIS aims to eliminate an entire religious group: Christians. He challenges American Christians, especially Protestants, to expand our view of the Christian family. Many of those being persecuted are Catholic or Orthodox, but are no less our brothers and sisters we worship with every Sunday.

On a couple of points I was left with questions. Moore gives a nod to mainstream Islam. He notes that Muslims make up the largest number of ISIS's targets, and that Muslims, Jews, and Christians must work together against ISIS. But I'm not clear where he draws the line? He gives dire warnings of ISIS adherents "in your own backyard.

Simply put, this book is a must read. I started reading this book just before a very, very recent trip to Iraqi Kurdistan, meeting Peshmerga, beautiful Yezidi people and the Kurdish people who have hospitality in their blood. I completed it on the return flight. I found the book inspiring, informative and relevant. A leading headline in this morning's Washington Post, "Three American teens, recruited online, are caught trying to join the Islamic State," underlines one of the premises of the book that ISIS is not only manifested in the Middle East and northern Africa. This book is a clarion call to wake up! Now is the time to become informed and more importantly to stand up, get involved and spread the word.

I read this book expecting to have my heart touched and I hoped get a clearer sense of what is going on over there. The news has been terrible in their coverage. I suspect because it is too dangerous to get video. But the confusion is evident and about the only thing clear about the coverage. If you want a clearer picture of ISIS and what is going on in the Middle East this is a short but essential book. The author brings you up to date on the historic importance of the area and a better understanding of the role of Christians in the area.
You also will get a very real picture of very real people. The author brings them into your living room and you wish they could stay with you and be safe. But then he stuns you! They want to stay and rebuild their homes and communities!
This book will humble you as you see the very real and deep Faith of these who have suffered so much. This book should fill our churches with people praying and offering plates with gifts to bless our brother's and sister's.
It is my prayer that God will use this book to support and bless the Church over there and awake this lethargic and sleeping Church in America. THIS IS WHY GOD HAS BLESSED US! So we can bless our suffering Church in the cradle of Christianity.

This is a wonderful, eye-opening book. I knew ISIS/ISIL was killing Christians and others, but had no idea of the extent. It has caused me to ponder deeply what can be done to help those in need---not just Christians, but all who are ruthlessly and mercilessly persecuted by ISIL/ISIS. The book is full of first-hand stories by witnesses to stunning atrocities. The book also has suggestions how we Americans can help---prayer being among those. I pray Christians and others will be safe from the horrors described in this book. One of the more profound recommendations---if not obvious---is the need to counteract hatred or prejudice that Muslims might have for Christians in our own country by living as Christ did, embracing all. There is no question evil exists and will always exist. And there is no question there will always be members/followers of ISIS/ISIL who seek to perpetuate fear and terror. But by treating people with kindness and respect, perhaps each of us, in a small way, can leave a positive and lasting impression on someone who might be "on the fence" about doing harm.
