More About the Author

A freckle-faced redhead born and raised in Hawaii, Kele Moon has always been a bit of a sore thumb and has come to enjoy the novelty of it. She thrives on pushing the envelope and finding ways to make the impossible work in her story telling. With a mad passion for romance, she adores the art of falling in love. The only rules she believes in is that, in love, there are no rules and true love knows no bounds.

So obsessed is she with the beauty of romance and the novelty of creating it, she's lost in her own wonder world most of the time. Thankfully she married her own dark, handsome, brooding hero who has infinite patience for her airy ways and attempts to keep her grounded. When she leaves her keys in the refrigerator or her cell phone in the oven, he's usually there to save her from herself. The two of them now reside in Florida with their three beautiful children, who make their lives both fun and challenging in equal parts--they wouldn't have it any other way.

Clay Powers is a famous UFC (Ultimate Fighting Champion) who loves the fight, but hates the circus of the press and fans that surround each match. Although he lives with his best friend, and local sheriff Wyatt and his sister Jules, Clay is otherwise kind of a loner. So when the new waitress in town, Melody offers him a piece of pie while he is eating at the local diner, just to be nice, he is touched. No one is ever nice to him for no reason.

Melody moved to the small town of Garnet to hide from her abusive ex-husband. Physically abused for years, after he threatened to kill her, she decided to start a new life, where he can't find her. While the more charming, suave men scare her, Clay, who is a huge dude and rough around the edges, makes her feel safe. They start a really cute friendship which soon blossoms to love.

I'm a big fan of Kele Moon's previous books, which are very dark and erotic and BDSM driven. Defying the Odds is the opposite of that. It is romantic, and so sweet. It's really a simple story of two unlikely people falling in love. What really stands out to me in this story is the courtship that takes place prior to any sort of physical relationship. Melody kind of starts it by offering Clay pie. And soon after, he always ends up in her section of the diner, and they have this very shy, flirtation that develops. Clay seduces her by helping her mop the diner floor after hours, or having his friends leave big tips when he knows she is having money problems. It is such a tender romance, especially one involving such a rough and touch UFC fighter.

After the wooing, we get some very erotic sex scenes that Kele Moon always writes so well.

The author's bio says "with a mad passion for romance, she adores the art of falling in love. The only rules she believes in is that, in love, there are no rules and true love knows no bounds." and boy did she deliver. I like strong female characters, and Melody was no exception. Despite her past, she's not afraid to embrace the possibility of finding love. She allows herself to feel again, and to fall for a man who truly deserved her love and her trust. On the flip side, Clay opened his heart to a woman, a real woman - one who had no idea about the extent of his fame. Ms Moon's characters came alive on the pages, and I found myself wishing I could be a part of their inner circle. Clay and Melody often seemed so fragile when it came to their feelings that I felt protective of them while rooting for them all the way. The love scenes were tender, romantic, passionate and so hot!

The first book in the Battered Hearts series introduces us to Clay "Powerhouse" Powers, a UFC heavyweight champion from a small town in Ohio and Melody Dylan, a waitress with a gentle soul and a tortured past. These two meet for the first time in Hal's Diner, over a piece of pumpkin pie (awww!). They are polar opposites: Clay is big, broad, buff, rough around the edges and fights for a living. He's used to being in the spotlight but hates the (media) circus around his favorite sport, as well as the many groupies that want him for his fortune and his celebrity status. Melody is all soft curves, gentle, angelic and kind-hearted. But underneath it all she's terrified and jumpy; hiding from her abusive ex-husband. As they slowly get to know one another, we learn that there is so much more to these two wonderful characters, and their unique connection is a really beautiful thing to behold.

This was a pretty good story. Melody, an abuse survivor, had to move away from her abusive ex-husband who does care if they are are divorced or not in the small town of Garnet. She serves a free slice of pie to the town's celebrity, UFC fighter, Clay. Clay's the strong and silent type and I really dig those kind of heroes. The two fell quick and discussed their painful pasts but did not let it get in the way of their love. They fell pretty quickly but sometimes when written right, it just fits. This story did. It has a sweet HEA but not sugary sweet at all which I also liked. Also, the sex scenes were scorching but did not overpower this story at all.

I also like the set up for the next book in the series, the secondary characters show a lot of promise and I look forward to reading more of Ms. Moon's work.

Would I recommend for other contemporary romance readers? Yes.

This story took me completely by surprise. I had been wanting to read a *sigh* worthy love story with some heat and this delivered. It's the first story I've read with a hero that's an Ultimate Fighting Champion. He's known worldwide, but Melody doesn't have a clue as to who Clay is the night she buys him a slice a pie at the diner she's working in. It's easy to say it's love at first sight for these two.

Melody is running from an abusive ex-husband. She left with the clothes on her back and is working double shifts at the diner to pay for her bills and save enough money in case she needs to run again. You'd think seeing a big fighter like Clay would have her running the other direction, but she felt their connection right away and even with all she'd been through, she knew letting Clay in was the right thing to do. Clay has a strong need to help and protect her and I loved that while he might look physically imposing, he really has a huge heart and Melody is the first and only woman to ever make him look forward to a future with somebody.

He nodded, not trusting himself to speak as he stared at Melody curled up in his arms, having never seen her without glasses on. It made her look younger, more innocent. He reached over and caressed her cheeks, flushed pink from the cold. The urge to kiss her was overwhelming.

Melody made the decision for both of them as her hands slid from beneath Clay's shirt to the back of his neck. She tugged him down at the same time she leaned up and pressed her lips against his. The kiss was chaste, soft, and sweet like Melody.

Clay was lost.

Both of these people have pasts that weren't kind to them.
