Editorial Reviews

Review

A classic power metal band of the highest order, Hibria present this concept album produced by Piet Sielck (Iron Savior, Blind Guardian, Paragon)!

Features Steel Lord On Wheels and Millennium Quest !

For fans of soaring power metal bands such as Iced Earth, Primal Fear, Hammerfall and Judas Priest!

Full press servicing and major ad campaign in Revolver, Metal Maniacs, Brave Words, Pit, Explicitly Intense and more!

Back to their home town after the Against the Faceless Demo Tour Hibria decided to go further in composing an unique album, with blasting energy, tied to the roots of Heavy Metal. This concept resulted from the contact from HIBRIA with the fans for many years, and the perception that most of the bands in the scene were faulty in doing a Heavy Metal album with balls .

The single Steel Lord on Wheels was released in 2001 only to the local fans from Porto Alegre and pointed the direction the band was heading to. The awesome response on the city and on the Internet confirmed that the band should go further on its goal.

In 2003 the album DEFYING THE RULES was composed and the recordings were finished on 2004. It brought together Heavy Metal at its best, without any other labels, allowing a travel in time of the 80 s Heavy Metal melodic lines, the 90 s speed and the 2000 s technical skills.

To complete the album concept, Piet Sielck was chosen to mix and master it on Germany due to his rough and, at same time, innovative style. The comics based art-work and lyrics also contributes to make from Defying the Rules an unique album.

It was made to true Metal Bangers and puts together the elements that will allow anyone understand why the Heavy Metal style has been so addictive for many years throughout different generations.

The first demo / Influences

The first demo tape from Hibria was called Metal Heart and it was released in 1997, two months after the singer Luri Sanson join the band. It was composed under the influence of bands such as Iron Maiden, Metallica, Helloween, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Racer-x, Manowar and Dream Theater. After the good response to the gigs and the demo tape on the band s hometown ( Porto Alegre, Brazil), Hibria started to spread its work in Europe. The demo was air played in Metal shows and received enthusiastic reviews in zines and magazines.

Against the Faceless / Line up

In August of 1999 the band released the demo-CD Against the Faceless with 3 new songs, continuing the worldwide release of its work. On the new demo, Hibria showed its musical evolution resulted from the stability since 1997 of the line up and the development of the technical skills of the members.

Against the Faceless Demo Tour

In August 1999, Hibria arrived in Belgium starting the named "Against the Faceless Demo Tour". The gigs took place in Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Czech Republic and Poland numbering 29 performances, including the metal temple De Biebop in Belgium. During the tour, the band got in direct contact with many fans and shared stages especially with Death Metal bands. At that time, HIBRIA got disappointment with the mainstream attitude that most of the Heavy Metal bands were taking. Nevertheless, the Death-Metal attitude would inspire HIBRIA in a definitive way.

there is no doubt about this one, it blew me away the first time i heard it and it still does now. The music is fast, melodic and heavy. The vocals are the best i heard since Lost Horizon's debut. The song writing gets a A+ and the production is meaty and clear. These guys play power metal the way it should be played, no cheesy lyrics, no keyboards to get in the way, and no progressive "orchestrations" gee whiz, come on. I am not only a metal reviewer, i am also a listener, I gurantee this one to all who listen to metal. Thank God, somebody finally got it right.

Hibria-Defying the Rules
4
By:Clifford Newsted

Hibria is an excellent band from Porto Alegre Brazil, their record is entitled Defying the Rules.
While the artwork is a bit on the cheesy side, never judge the book by it's cover, as what lies within will smoke most power metal bands out there now. Power metal is a genre that is dominated primarily by the European market, it's pleasant to get a perspective from other countries. Hibria are a band that molds the traditional power metal in the vein of Helloween, Maiden, Priest and Saxon, then throws in some modern elements that you'd find in a Startovarius or Hammerfall release. Fans of old school guitar shredding will love Defying the Rules, that's not to say that's the highlight of the record. All of the musicians are top notch players, strong vocal performance, great riffs, the lyrical side is the weak link, but can be forgiven. If you're looking at for something old and something new, score a copy of Defying the Rules, if it doesn't get you the first time, listen again, it will grow on you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Accelerate to full power and blast your eardrums into oblivion., August 1, 2007

4.5 stars. Upon first listen the music on this album thottled me senseless and bashed in my skull with its speed and powerful production. There are fantastic solos, a great vocalist that belts out mid-range notes only to blindside you with a phenomenal sustained scream, and lots of Progressive elements that become more discernable upon repeated spins. As for the lyrical content I actually enjoy all the "Mad Max"-style apocalyptic future themes as it is a much different take for Power Metal to embrace than the typical fantasy storylines that seem to saturate the genre. As far as the musicianship goes the work here is stellar; and it is especially refreshing to here a bass player that can not only be heard in the mix but shows incredible talent besides. Hibria's style reminds me of peak-era Judas Priest on large doses of crystal meth mixed with modern day Power Metal titans who incorporate elements of Progressive Metal. The future of this band looks absolutely incandescent! Color me impressed. Recommended.
