Book Description

September 1, 1996 Artists in Focus
Painter and draftsman, graphic artist and sculptor, creator of some of the finest pastels of his or any other time, the Impressionist Edgar Degas combined genius with technical bravura. This selection of his works from the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago is accompanied by a survey, by a Degas specialist, of his career and his lifelong exploration of motifs and ideas. The book is one of a series intended for the general reader, but also considered suitable for students and scholars.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Portraits of Degas' early career and details on his works use the Art Institute's extensive Degas holdings to provide visual embellishment. Expect a title light on discussion and heavy on visual images, with Boggs tracing patterns of experimentation and innovation which were key Degas contributions. -- Midwest Book Review

I love Impressionist art, and Degas is, of course, one of the best. Enjoyed reading about what inspired him as well as seeing his extraordinary works reproduced so beautifully in this affordable compendium.
