Book Description

Artist by Himself October 1994
this beautiful volume offers an astonishingly rich and detailed view of one of the greatest French artists of the nineteenth century. In addition to over 250 color illustrations, this work draws on a range of sources - from the artist's own notebooks and letters, as well as anecdotes and memoirs of friends and acquaintances - to trace a vivid portrait of Degas at every stage of his career.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Although Degas' letters and notebook jottings don't tell us much about his views on art, they nevertheless offer a sometimes revealing self-portrait. He writes about his obsessions with photography, ballet and lithography. He discusses the painful isolation and pleasures of his bachelor existence and his frustrations as an artist. In impressionistic travel notes and breezy letters to friends, Degas' sharp eye and quick wit come through. Yet, it is the superb illustrations that make this scrapbook of writings and conversations a delight. Along with pastels, paintings and prints, there are seldom-seen improvisational drawings and detailed studies from the notebooks. In lush, impressionistic seascapes, dark, almost symbolic landscapes and works of startling, even violent power, we see an unfamiliar side of the artist. The more familiar dancers, jockeys and bathers are here too. Lovers of Degas will treasure this volume.

2.0 out of 5 stars the right book, the wrong edition, July 18, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is truly a wonderful series of art books, but unfortunately the Time Warner editions are mere shadows of the originals. The letters are interesting enough if you are already familiar with Degas and some of the circles that he inhabited, but if not it will be terribly disorientating. The reason most people will want to buy this book is for the abundant number of reproductions, but unfortunately this Time Warner edition is a very small book, with mainly post card sized illustrations. What is more, over a hundred pages (and therefore around a hundred illustrations) have been cropped to fit this smaller edition. By all means get the Little Brown Books edition!! It is out of print but still available through the Amazon marketplace or eBay. I was sorely disappointed with this version, expecting it to be twice as big and a hundred pages thicker.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best art books I've ever read., March 30, 2009

This review is from: Degas by Himself (Artist by Himself) (Hardcover)
I'm a professional artist so I buy a lot of art books. I received this book as a gift from an aunt and was amazed at how readable it is. there are plenty of art books with photos you want to pour over again and again, but I have found very few that are actually worthy of "reading", and fewer still as enjoyable as a good novel. This book, mostly through DeGas' own letters, relays his travels and struggles, loneliness and constant eye problems.

I was a fan of "DeGas the artist" before reading this book, but since reading it several years ago, I've felt as if he's a dear old friend as well.
