I just got back from the Degas exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and brought home this book as a way of reliving the show. The book is truly gorgeous, printed in Italy on thick silky paper that serves as a wonderful medium for the 250 color reproductions. Degas's paintings, pastels, monotones and sculptures come alive on these pages.

Among ordinary art lovers (like me), Degas always brings to mind ballet dancers, and remarkable as they are, they've become a bit of cliché. But when you look at his nudes, a different Degas emerges. The dancers, too, become significant in a whole new way.

There are several authors, all tremendously knowledgeable. These curators and art experts each write their own chapters discussing Degas's fascination with the nude. They take us from his early training in classical drawing, through his period of brothel nudes, and onto his daring exploration of naturalist nudes in intimate settings.

You can read the book straight through or skip around. The text is so densely illustrated, you can also simply "read" the images. No matter where your eye falls in the text, you'll learn interesting things about Degas - his innovative techniques, his troubled eyesight, his shifting attitudes towards his art, what his fellow artists were doing, what the critics were saying.

A vibrant picture of the era emerges. The nineteenth century experienced a so-called crisis of the nude, and Degas was at the heart of it.

I wanted to learn more about certain works I saw at the exhibit. In each case, I easily found a reproduction and an insightful analysis of that work in the text. This book is quite comprehensive.

But it's not a biography (and there are aspects of Degas's life that I'd prefer to forget anyway).

Ok, I have twenty Degas books, including Thompson's Degas Nudes, so don't really need this one, but I have to say that the colour reproductions are amazing, the production values are stunning. Also, there are things to be learned: the chapters on the brothel pictures and on the last pictures are very worthwhile. It is a slight pity that the authors didn't tackle the Degas vs. the feminists issue (it is slightly referred to), as they have all the materials to hand.

This makes a great addition to my library. The book is well written and the images are stunning. If you are an art lover or a budding artist looking to paint the nude, get this book!

Many people feel that Degas' work with nudes are the best that Impressionism offered, and this book certainly makes a good argument in their favor. Large prints offer good detail on high-quality paper and accompanying text does a decent job at providing context.

Got this for my Father and he has not been disappointed,

This is the Boston Museum's beautiful presentation of the works found in the traveling Degas & the Nude show. We saw the show in Paris and chose to purchase the catalog when we got home.
