4.0 out of 5 stars Degas and his sculptures - a catalogue raisonné of the sculptures., March 14, 2009
This review is from: Degas Sculptures: Catalogue Raisonné of the Bronzes (Hardcover)
This book is catalogue to the exhibition organised by International Arts and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco which displayed one of only four remaining "vintage" sets of bronzes done by Degas which were on loan from the Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo, Brazil. They were probably never intended for public display. It includes colour photos of the bronzes today as well as the photos taken by Gautier when the originals were found in Degas' studidio after his death in September 1917. There are also photos taken by Leonard von Matt in the nineteen fifties. A Google search will uncover more information about the controversy which surrounds these sculptures as art historians bat their arguments to and fro. This is a superb volume by The Torch Press and International Arts and will be of enormous interest to all lovers of Degas, controversy or not. There are ten essays by Degas specialists which illuminate the photographs.
