One of a number of studies undertaken by the United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) which aims to provide a searching reappraisal of the regional implications of the vast changes now occurring in different areas and sectors of the world economy. The changing international scene is dominated by the fact that we now live in a multipolar international economy with the emergence of Japan and the European Community as major economic poles together with the United States, and this has led to significant structural changes in the organization of economic enterprises of the advanced economies. For these reasons studies of deindustrialization and regional economic transformations in the developed nations have been commissioned, and this volume covers the USA.
