Of course! Carlin had tried time travel before, returned to the past but failed to save her the first time. 12 Monkeys does a good job with a similar theme, but I'd rather not say so much that you can't enjoy the surprises and twists if you decide to check it out.

Yeah, it's called "Time After Time" except in that case its H.G. Welles chasing Jack the Ripper and trying to prevent a murder. There are some similarities but that doesn't detract from the twisting plot of this movie.
