5.0 out of 5 stars Best Country and Bluegrass Album since the 40's., April 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Del Doc & Mac (Audio CD)
I kept hearing how this CD was the best country and bluegrass record since the 40's. I kept hearing about what a "special" album this was and how it was such an "event". Well, let me tell you something. It's ALL true. This is the very best of and the roots of and the history of what is now modern country music. "The Old Account" is no less than Classic. Actually, the whole album is Classic. It's a must-have for ANYBODY into Americana, Country and or Bluegrass music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem of a CD, February 1, 2000

I don't know where I've been, I only recently discovered Del McCoury when he was on Prairie Home Companion. I ordered this CD and I was a little put off by it at first, because of the lack of polish. But "Speak to Me My Darlin'" really grabbed me; a simple tune with sparse instrumention sung soulfully by Del. Then the more I listened to the CD the more I fell in love with the whole thing. It has such a purity and a charm to it, it's a good thing I live alone because I've been playing it constantly. "Live and Let Live," "Talk of the Town," "Black Mountain Rag," and "More Pretty Girls Than One" especially are standouts, but the whole thing is great. I have two more Del McCoury CD's on order though which I'm looking forward to very much, after having had a chance to see him and his band in concert recently.

I have not enjoyed a new bluegrass CD as much as this one in a long time. Listening to Del on "Speak to Me Lil Darlin" makes you feel you are in the presence of greatness. Listening to Doc and Ronnie play together is really a treat. You won't regret adding this to your collection.

I find this album a joy, and it remains fresh and interesting each time I listen. The harmonies and instrumentals showcases the great collaboration between the artists. I have been listening to country for about a year now. This CD convinced me that my musical home is in bluegrass. My other bluegrass favorites are "The Mountain" (McCroury, Earle), and "BlueGrass Rules" (Skaggs). If you like them, I think you will like this one as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars History speaks loads on this one! Buy It!, January 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Del Doc & Mac (Audio CD)
I bought this not knowing about it because I saw Doc Watson and Del McCoury's names on it. My trust in these great pickers as well as Mac Wiseman was greatly rewarded in this true gem of an alblum. If you're tired of all the supposed country music coming out of Nashville, put this on, sit back relax because you will truly enjoy the old style hymns and the laid back style as well as some hard driving Bluegrass like "Beauty of My Dreams" by Del McCoury. The solos, the harmony and the picking doesn't get any better. Also, let your cd continue to play after the last song. You'll get a very nice suprise. If you want to enjoy a really fine cd, get this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mac and the Boys, July 1, 2009
This review is from: Del Doc & Mac (Audio CD)
If your looking for olde thyme music then this is for you. Mac Wiseman's sublime front porch vocals mix perfectly with Doc's soulful flatpickin and Del's high lonesome power. Plus you have the Dels' boys playing backup on many of these songs which completes the asskickin.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not sure about this one., July 26, 2000
This review is from: Del Doc & Mac (Audio CD)
No doubt Mac Wiseman, Doc Watson and Del McCoury have contributed so much to the world of country and bluegrass music and deserve to be legends. There were some cuts on this CD that I just couldn't stand to listen to. I did like the cuts that Del sang on, and his son Ronnie is sensational on the mandolin. I'm just not sure this is going to be one of my favorite CD's.

Too much Mac, not enough Doc. However it is worth it just for "New Moon" alone.
