Better Quality of Life,
By
This review is from: Delay the Disease -Exercise and Parkinson's Disease (Spiral-bound)
Excellent instructional book. I was diagnosed in early 2004 with PD and frankly did not have much to look forward to. David and his instructional book changed all of that! I now sit-to-stand and walk with ease. My balance has improved and I even dance again! Friends that knew me before Delay the Disease can't believe the improvement and new acquanitances are are shocked to learn that I have PD! The book has easy to use instructions (with corresponding pictures!) and is seperated into three levels of difficulty. Anyone (at any stage) of PD should try this book! It will improve your quality of life. It did for me!

Delay the Disease is user-friendly for the PD patient,

This review is from: Delay the Disease -Exercise and Parkinson's Disease (Spiral-bound)
Parkinson's patients who buy David Zid's exercise book will have no excuse for skipping a workout regardless of where they happen to be. Nearly two dozen routines can be performed while seated-even in tight spaces like an airplane. Doing the Spider on a Mirror(fingertips of opposite hands touching, then releasing a pair at a time)might draw curious glances from other passengers, but they'll likely decide you're just a nervous flier praying for a smooth ride. Unlike other exercise books, routines covered in Delay the Disease don't call for investment in specialized equipment. Stand behind a chair and hold it while you work the knees and legs. A kitchen counter provides support for balance training. The book's design makes Delay the Disease user friendly. Each exercise is illustrated with as many as four pictures in color on heavy paper. Spiral binding makes it easy to hold the book open to the appropriate page. ~Tom P., PD exercise class participant

Purchased with PD[[ASIN:0470073950 Parkinson's Disease For Dummies (For Dummies (Health & Fitness)) which provides a wide range of information about PD and includes an excellent illustrated chapter on diet and exercise.
I like that Delay the Disease -Exercise and Parkinson's Disease is a spiral book with diagrams. Guidance is provided to help design a weekly schedule. Exercises are grouped by degree of difficulty and tabs allow speedy reference to them while you are working out. Dummies is my reference tool but this book is used every day. I envision tossing this into my suitcase when travelling to ensure I do my exercises.

Great book. Exercises all have pictures clearly showing what to do and there are 3 levels of difficulty so people can use this at different stages of the disease. Organized my workout.

My husband is in the early stages of Parkinson's Disease. His neurologist suggested that he begin these exercises & also that he begin riding an exercise bike, set on no resistance, for 80-90 RPM, for at least 15 minutes, 6 days a week (this is an exciting study that is proving to help relieve some PD patients' symptoms)
Not knowing if there was a difference between the book & the dvd, we purchased both Delay the Disease -Exercise and Parkinson's Disease & Delay the Disease Exercise and Parkinson's Disease DVD. My husband has since learned that he didn't need the DVD. The book's photos and instructions are clear enough for him to understand. If you'd rather watch & exercise along, the DVD is the best choice for you. The book is spiral bound and lays flat; you can easily see the photos & read the instructions as you exercise. The DVD is nice because the exercises are performed outside. You can follow along with David Zid, a professional fitness instructor. When David Zid researched exercise & PD, he found only a few basic exercises had been designed for the PD patient. He knew that he could help PD patients and developed this exercise plan. Exercise Options This book is broken down into several sections. I'll try to summarize: Wake Up Call, Walking & Balance Drills, Cardiovascular Exercise, Strength Training --Workout with weights, Non-weight (Core) Days--. Facial & Voice Exercises, Night Time Stretching. The exercises are broken down into levels of difficulty: ~~~Level A - performed in a seated position, the basic exercise which everyone should be able to accomplish no matter their PD severity. ~~~Level B - tougher than A. More balance & stability is needed; some exercises may be performed in the standing position if applicable to your level. ~~~Level C - is the hardest. Good balance, stability, and hand mobility are needed. The morning and evening exercises take about 15 minutes each. The other exercises take 45 min to an hour for my husband to complete. Because my husband is in the early stages of PD, he's not sure how much the exercises are helping him, but he knows it can't hurt. PD is progressive, but can be greatly improved with an exercise routine. You can find more information and a 'Fit Tip of the Month' at the website delaythedisease dot com.

I am finding this book useful as an exercise aid to keep my body more flexible and to avoid some of the stiffness which comes with PD. I have not attempted all exercises yet - but am working on it. I have found exercise also helps to feel less depressed and more positive. Robyne WallerDelay the Disease -Exercise and Parkinson's Disease

This book is like a friend. It coaxes, encourages and explains. The easy-to-use format makes it possible to use by myself. Exercises are very well depicted and there's no confusion . I'm really glad I have it, and try to devote time each day to using it.

This book is terrific for those with Parkinson's disease, but stretching can benefit anyone, especially the elderly.
I have read and heard more and more from doctors about the benefits of exercise for Parkinson's patients. There is no cure for this disease, so any information on slowing the progression of the disease is useful. It is a disease that manifests a different set of symptoms for each sufferer, but some commonalities can be back pain, loss of balance, postural instability and slowness or freezing of movement. Soft or slurred speech is also a common symptom. Many Parkinson patients have mask like facial expressions due to infrequent blinking and loss of facial muscle control and tone. This book has exercises that stretch various muscle and muscle groups to help keep or regain balance and stability. There are exercises to keep the face muscles loose and keep up one's speech volume. There are levels of exercises so one can do the exercises seated and move on to more vigorous movement, or continue at the seated level. Each exercise is accompanied by photos which are very clear. The book is in a loose leaf format which makes it very easy to keep open. I find it extremely useful. It helps keep me as limber and balanced as possible. |
