Editorial Reviews

Review

Kirsten Thien Delicious There is an often ignored golden rule in life that, if used, would vastly improve all of our lives. The rule is simple. It is Everything is better with horns . I m not talking about the bull horns on the front of a rich Texans Cadillac but instead the musical horns that make everything in life better. Be it a coronation, a foxhunt, or in this case a blues album; horns make everything better. Kirsten Thien is clearly smarter than Steven Hawking because her new album Delicious starts off with horns loud and clear and Steven Hawking s audio book for A Brief History of Time contains zero horns. I don t know where Kirsten stands on the black hole debate but I would be interested in hearing her stance if she has the same horns playing behind her. Delicious is a taste of the Blues that you will never forget. It s like the warm apple pie your grandmother made for you and even though she didn t play a horn while you ate, it was still good. Every track is somehow better than the one before it and leaves you suffering a huge let down when the album ends after only 11 songs. But man alive, these 11 songs are fandamntastic! 8 of the songs were either wrote or co-wrote by KT showing that her depth as a song writer is far ahead of the pack on this her third album. From the grab you by the ears and pull you straight into the speakers opening song Love That s Made to Share to the classic cover of Wild Women Don t Have the Blues with Billy Gibson on the Harmonica, she has crafted a classically perfect album. The band Kirsten is playing with is tighter than a Japanese hotel room on every track and compliment KT s own guitar playing as well as her amazing voice. Listening to Taxi Love is enough to make you feel the need to splash some cold water on your face or possible light a cigarette when it s over. Her voice is so amazingly sultry and seductive there should be a law against it. She out does herself on Ain t That the Truth . The entire song flows so well together it s hard to imagine that it could sound any better. KT s voice is strong but quiet allowing you to feel it in all of its warmth and sadness. It is just one of the many breath taking high points on this album that also include the excellent Treat im Like a Man which is KT s chance to dispense life lessons to the ladies when the song breaks down in the middle. I can t imagine that a voice like this wasn t always going to be a singer but, KT was actually going to school at Georgetown University for banking and investments. If there is anyone in this world that you would want to tell you that you are hopelessly broke, it s her. She could sing you a song that says Your father just killed your mother and he s coming for you next and you would just nod your head while quietly saying That s awesome . I m serious; her voice is what you get when you take all the qualities of all the great singers and put them into a blender. She has the range, the soul, the sexiness, it s unfair to the rest of the singers out there but it s great for us. From what I ve seen of her on YouTube she is well worth checking out live! Her voice is clearly not the result of studio magic . Thank whatever god you believe in that you re not that deaf dumb and blind kid that sure played a mean pinball and give your ears an early Christmas present. Kirsten Thien has an amazing, blues-y, powerful voice! I have seen her live several times and she has a terrific personality to match her fabulous voice. Her songs are really fun. Even my children love to listen to this album! Try to catch her live if you can!

Delicious September 8, 2011
Format:Audio CD
These days, you can trip over hundreds of truly excellent blues chanteuses just walking to lunch. But Thien's supple voice can act out a song's lyrics with both honesty and cinematic effect, and she can also traverse pop, rock, and country to cook up some pleasing stylistic blends. A real treat is "Please Drive," where Thien is joined by blues legend Hubert Sumlin on guitar.

"This fire-haired songwriter's voice strikes a perfect balance between the precise but homey crooning of Bonnie Raitt and the sheer incendiary power of Janis Joplin...Too macho for a taste of estro-rock? "Delicious" will have you asking for seconds." -- Stephen Fortner, Keyboard Magazine

I have not given her a fair chance yet,
I have been sick and missing my music......filled evenings...
She has a unique voice and I promise to update when I can give her a fair shot on a good review.
