Review

"In Delicious El Salvador, Maher gives you a thorough course on Salvadoran cuisine - one of the strongest Latin cuisines represented in Los Angeles - with around 75 recipes in English. It's the only book of its kind and one of only two Salvadoran cookbooks in print . . . Maher makes sure to include the fundamental preparations like salsa casera and salsa criolla - the two essential tomato sauces - and Salvadoran-style beans, rice dishes and tortillas that are served with many dishes. Yes, there are recipes for pupusas--don't worry..." -- Los Angeles Magazine Digest, by Bill Esparza

"Ambassador for Her Native Food - This beautiful and unique volume is the first English-language cookbook dedicated to the cuisine of El Salvador, and it reflects the love and passion Maher has for the food of her homeland." -- UCLA Magazine, by Laura Perry

"When Alicia Maher was growing up in Santa Ana,...she probably never imagined that her love of her country's and her family's food and its traditions would one day take her across the world, all the way to China. Yet that's exactly where Maher found herself in May of this year, when she was awarded Gourmand International's 2014 award for Best First Cookbook...Maher was the first Central American to receive the award, validation...of Maher's belief that...Delicious El Salvador, filled a void in food publishing." -- The Latin Kitchen, a publication of Latina Magazine, by Julie Schwietert Collazo

"Alicia Maher combina sus conocimientos de historia del arte con sus habilidades de 'poeta en la cocina' para escribir un libro de recetas, que se transmiten entre familias en su país de origen, El Salvador..." -- El Tiempo Latino, a publication of the Washinton Post, by EFE News Agency

"A través de su obra, Maher da a conocer, no solo a los salvadoreños y sus descendientes que se encuentran fuera del país sino también al resto del mundo, que la gastronomía salvadoreña no solo está compuesta de las conocidas pupusas sino de otros platos típicos que han pasado de generación en generación." -- La Opinion, by Marvelia Alpízar

There were so many recipes missing that I was hoping to get, it seems that although it was a beautiful thought about creating this book, so many recipes were missed, instead the pages were filled with useless stuff.(cafe con leche, salads with lemon juice please) Most of the recipes used the same ingredients over and over like the soups. Where are the recipes for tamales pizques, chanfain, almuerzo, riguas, tamales de pollo, tamales de elote, tortas de elote, conserva de leche, alegrias (dulce con ajonjoli) nuegados con atol schuco. No,I did not get my money's worth, pretty disappointed.

My wife and I have been looking for a cokbook like this one, my wife loves Salvaran foods, but the problem is that she only speaks English so this cookbook solved the problem! she has prepared a few of the dishes and drinks and they turned out really good. We love the narrative/story of each recipe. Love the pictures!!!!
Thanks Alicia!!!!!!!

If you are looking for authentic and traditional Salvadorean recipes that are delicious to make, this is the book for you! I appreciate that Alicia took amazingly delicious recipes and laid them out in a way that are simple to make. She covers some of the crown jewels of Salvadorean cooking dishes like Pupusas and Torrejas and leads you through the cooking process making you look like a pro. The pictures are colorful and true to how your dishes will look. The measurement "Equivalencies and Conversion" table at the beginning of the book is very helpful. Also, the book offers many incredible vegetarian recipes as well as a gluten-free tortilla recipe. I have been looking for a Salvadorean recipe book that holds true to authentic recipes and this books delivers them! I highly recommend it :).
