Francesca and Philip have been childhood friends forever, but she never expected to have to MARRY him! Of course, as her friend Chastity pointed out, Philip was handsome, well-mannered, wealthy, and a future earl, besides being an all-round good guy. What else could a girl expect in a husband?

Well, Francesca had been looking forward to having a London season and meeting lots of eligible gentlemen and finding that one special man who could make her swoon. Philip was like a brother to her. Marriage to him might well get her away from her quarrelsome father, but she couldn't work up any enthusiasm for the idea, especially after he insisted that they would both be free to go their own independent ways after marriage. What exactly did Philip mean by that? She wasn't quite sure, except that she suspected that dallying with other women was involved, and that was hurtful, even though she wasn't in love with him.

Therefore, Francesca and Philip make a bargain. They will have a secret engagement--to please their parents--and Francesca will go to London for a taste of the social whirl before the wedding. If she finds someone who makes her swoon, the engagement will be broken. But she has to allow Philip to try to make her swoon too, and if he does, she will agree to marry him.

Philip's confidence that he can make Francesca see him in a romantic light is somewhat dashed when she becomes a great success in London and goes to considerable trouble to avoid him while she socializes with many eligible gentlemen. He realizes that he has to become more assertive in his courtship, using some of the rakish skills he has acquired over the years to get her alone and ply her with seductive kisses and touches.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fortunately a free offering February 21, 2013

At first I thought my problem was that I was spoiled by finding Ms. Heyer first. But, then I realized I have read some good Regency short stories and novellas, this just wasnt one of them. I would have rather cut out the sex scene and replace it with more info on the Duke and his daughters relationship. It almost hints that she might not be his he thinks. Not sure. Much is vague. Just a few nods to Regency London almost as an afterthought as if to say it is RL and not contemporary. Usually I enjoy coming of age and finding love but this just felt stiffly written to formula with a race to sex. I prefer stopping outside the bedroom doors which is where I thought this did. But, I did not take off stars for my error just the errors in writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful doesn't even begin to describe it! September 12, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I devoured A Delightful Arrangement in one sitting. Francesca and Phillip are wonderful characters and I was amazed at how well they were crafted given how quickly the story flew by. Cecilia Gray has quite the knack for crafting fresh, fun stories that make me race through to the end. I look forward to reading more from her!

If I had to pay good money for this badly-researched, poorly-edited mess, I would have been quite upset.

As it is, I only wasted an hour of my life.

The Bad:

Anachronism - the dialogue was atrociously anachronistic, even if you take into account the fact that this book was written for light entertainment. The characters also behaved in a manner that wasn't true to the period. It IS possible to write engaging fiction within the confines of period conventions--plenty of authors have done so. Do some research!

Language - oh the adverb abuse! Every verb was preceded by an adverb, every action smothered by an adjective. Open any book on writing, ANY book, and it will advise the aspiring author to avoid adverbs. And with good reason. They are lazy, amateurish and ineffective. Honestly, I've read fanfiction written with more subtlety and technique than this.

Anticlimatic - the sex scene, which was supposed to be a high point in the story, was pretty feeble.

Predictable - the characters are clichés and nothing interesting happens, even for a novella.

The Somewhat Okay:

There is some tension between the protagonists.

Overall: If you are a regular reader of historical romance, or if you have any respect for good writing, you will not enjoy this book.

A Delightful Arrangement (The Gentlemen Nextdoor) by Cecilia Gray
(Review by Saewod Tice)

Phillip has a duty to marry Francesca. He has always protected his former neighbor and childhood companion, and now that she is of marriageable age, he will give her what she needs most - a real home where she is welcome and wanted.

Unfortunately for him....she is done with being dutiful.

After years of being an obedient daughter to a hateful father, Francesca jumps into her first Season. Francesca is ready to dance every dance, flirt with every bachelor and snatch what she wants most - a man she loves who will make her swoon.

Unfortunately for her...he now sees making her swoon as his duty, too.

And Phillip takes his duties very seriously.

A Delightful Arrangement by Cecilia Gray is more than delightful. It was a non-explicit steamy read. Beside the premise and the fun characters, what I loved most were the hot scenes without getting erotic. There are few novels/novellas that have been able to get my blood pumping without taking the scene over into an obvious erotic moment. Neck nuzzling and earlobe nibbling have never been hotter.

The only downfall in this novella is that it is a novella and not a longer novel. I really wished it would've been longer, even a bit longer. I feel like I'm missing an amazing ending to this tale which made me want Celia to continue- even if it were to just give me an epilogue.

Great Minds Thinking Aloud Rating (GMTA): 4.5/5 Ravens
Recommending reading age: 18+ for some situations
