Well done, but a bit unbalanced (in my opinion),

This review is from: Away Delights -- Lute solos and songs from Shakespeare's England by Robert Johnson (Audio CD)
This is a good CD, but be aware -- if you are buying it mostly for the SONGS rather than the lute solos -- that the songs on the CD total less than 30 minutes. In contrast, the lute solos total 35 minutes. There are thirteen songs and only ten lute solos, but many songs are quite short, and many of the lute solos are quite long.
I feel that for a recital such as this, combining lute songs with lute solos, that the balance should tip more in favor of the songs. This is not to denigrate Matthew Wadsworth's playing, but I don't find Johnson's lute solos particularly interesting, while I very much enjoy Carolyn Sampson's marvelous singing over Wadsworth's tasteful accompaniment. Recommended, with reservations. |
