This review is from: Delilah doolittle and the purloined pooch (Pet Detective Mystery Series) (Paperback)
Delilah Doolittle was new to me with this title. I found her career choice to be quite unique and of great interest. What I expected to be glossed over as a gimmick turned out to be a fascinating way to spend one's time. The plot twisted and led me along to a good conclusion full of danger and intrigue. I hurried to order the other titles in this series and look forward to them.

am a fan of mystery stories since childhood. Would love to hear the author read this aloud on Books on Tape. Think her whimsical sayings would be the ultimate in her English accent! Looking forward to her next book! Hurry out with it

Delilah Doolittle is a British lady living in Southern California, and trying to make a living as a pet detective. As she is working on finding an award-winning German shepard, she stumbles across a sinister conspiracy involving blackmail, shock collars, and even murder!
As any cozy fan might predict, local law enforcement fails to take her seriously so she is forced to investigate the cases of missing dogs and murders on her own. With the help of a quirky best friend, a fellow Brit with a sketchy past, and her faithful dog Watson, Delilah slowly unravels the truth. This book is a pretty typical cozy, but some of the dialogue is snappy and the human and canine characters are appealing enough to hook dog lovers.

Delightfully original, with sly humor and an abundance of fun characters. Almost *too* cozy for my taste, I sometimes felt as if I'd stumbled into a series written fifty years ago, but that didn't lessen my enjoyment of the story. The ending was a bit over the top, with the protagonist doing something incredibly stupid that put her in danger, only to have her rescue come across as similarly implausible. The book is a fun, light read, and I look forward to more in the series.

Where else but in California could one find an elderly English lady
make a living as a pet detective. Delilah Doolittle and her assistant,
Watson the Doberman, have been hired to locate a missing German Shepherd,
Herbert Fitzgherbert. Delilah and Watson start their investigation in
Fitzherbert's home where they find a human corpse wearing an electric dog
collar.
Though she will continue her hunt for the missing canine, Delilah promises the police that she will stay out of their investigation of the murdered human. However, Delilah quickly realizes that Herbert's trail leaves her assisting the reluctant law enforcement officials. As she gets closer to locating Herbert, Delilah also gets closer to identifying the killer since both cases are linked. DELILAH DOOLITTLE AND THE PURLOINED POOCH is a humorous pet detective mystery that will be enjoyed by dog lovers and fans of Ace Ventura (even if Delilah is only a ten of hearts). Patricia Guiver shows that she has talent in her debut novel, but allows her heroine to be a bit too long winded (I presume that a few more bows from Watson would have helped) and the story line to simple for who-done-it purists. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, only wish it was longer! Delilah Doolittle's personality reminds me of Amelia Peabody and Kinsey Milhone -- feisty, self-deprecating, a little too curious for her own good. Loved the "English" perspective on things, and the cast of eccentric characters. The dialogueis clever but natural, the descriptions of places and occurrences so detailed I can picture them easily. All in all, an excellent read for a firstbook. I look forward to many more.
