4.0 out of 5 stars A good cookbook that's also entertaining to read.
If you want to learn more about southern cooking then this is the right book for you. It includes almost all the recipes that the South is famous for and the author, whose passion for cooking is contagious, does a good job presenting the different recipes with entertaining anecdotes of her own.
However, if you are looking for some healthy and quick recipes then...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad book.........
but you have to wonder how much time was spent editing when the recipe most people would buy the book for, the mac and cheese, was faulty. It seems like many of the other recipes also have problems with missing ingredients, missing steps, or incorrect measurements. Most can be figured out easily enough, but they really should have tried harder. Buy it used.

If you want to learn more about southern cooking then this is the right book for you. It includes almost all the recipes that the South is famous for and the author, whose passion for cooking is contagious, does a good job presenting the different recipes with entertaining anecdotes of her own.
However, if you are looking for some healthy and quick recipes then maybe you should get a different cookbook. The author doesn't give any calorie counts or preparation times. What she does give you are some delicious and sometimes indulgent recipes. This book was clearly written for the love of food not to watch your waistline.

My only complaint is that some of the recipes didn't seem to have the right measures. For example the famous Maccaroni and Cheese Recipe(which btw won an award on the Oprah Show) called for one 9x13 pan and states that it serves 6-8 people. Well, when I made it, I came out with THREE 9x 13 pans of maccaroni and cheese which I ended up giving away to friends and family. But everybody confirmed that it was the best Mac and Cheese ever! So just use some common sense when you look at the amount of ingredients versus the serving size.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Wonderful, May 14, 2007

I bought this cookbook after it was raved about and soldout on QVC. The recipes are fabulous. Some are so supper easy, its a wonder I never heard of them (Strawberry Butter). Others are so sought after, I couldn't wait to make it my signature dish (Oxtails and Mac/cheese). Still others...well, surfice to say its just the best. The pictures are inspiring and make you wish you were there. This book is also a great gift to a best girlfriend. To make things even sweeter, I didn't have to go on QVC's waitlist, and I paid half the price. The oxtail recipe alone is worth the price of the entire book.

1.0 out of 5 stars For Readers...not Cooks, April 6, 2008

Any reviewer rating this cookbook higher than one star is rating how Delilah's personality and the story of her success comes across in the book...it is certainly NOT because of the success of the recipes.

Not enough attention was paid to documenting and testing the book's recipes. I have now tried two recipes (at great additional expense to serve the (gi-normous) macaroni and (multiple exotic) cheese casserole and bake the lemon cake only to discover that both recipes have missing steps and/or ingredients.

I feel the publishers owe those who (like me) purchased this book for full price a place where we can see the corrected recipes. On the publisher's website there is no place where they receive/post the corrections, and to add insult to injury, are still selling the book for full price.

Be forewarned! There is a reason why a new (non remaindered) copy of this cookbook sells for less than $2...spend the money for the back story and pretty pictures. It is not worth the investment if you seek new soulfood recipes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mac and Cheese is the best!, January 9, 2007
This review is from: Delilah's Everyday Soul: Southern Cooking With Style (Hardcover)
My husband saw this on Oprah (!) and kept talking about the macaroni cheese recipt - and it is EVERY bit as good and decadent as it looks. Great, great recipes but don't look at the pictures if you are dieting - it is too much temptation!

I have only made one recipe from this book. The mac and cheese recipe is very easy and the end result is to die for. This will be the best mac and cheese you will ever eat in your lifetime. Thanks Delilah

3.0 out of 5 stars Missing a step, September 2, 2007

The "famous" macaroni and cheese recipe is missing a step, but it can be figured out easily enough. Seems like a nice cookbook but I haven't tried all the recipes yet. There is a bit of extra "fluff" between recipes. Pleasant book in any case.

5.0 out of 5 stars ohhhhhhh Delilah!, July 24, 2007

I bought this book thinking it was just a cookbook but I was sure delighted when I opened it up and read it cover to cover. Deliah shares about how she got her love for entertaining and using fine china, and how she learned from her grandmother how to set a nice, inviting table. I tried two of the recipes so far and they were not hard at all and boy, were they so flavorful! Delilah also gives great tips in this book. This cookbook will be used often.
