Aguilar returns home after a short business trip only to find that his wife, Agustina, has gone crazy. No tiene idea de qué le ha podido ocurrir durante los tres días de su ausencia, y con el fin de ayudarla a salir de la crisis empieza a investigar, sólo para descubrir lo poco que sabe sobre las profundas perturbaciones escondidas en el pasado de la mujer que ama. Narrada con talento y emoción, la historia principal de esta novela se fragmenta en otras que se anudan a través de personajes llenos de matices, y se cierra con un final bello y esperanzador, digno de un libro intenso y hermoso.

Hay que reconocerlo, esta novela es de lo mejor que se ha escrito en lengua española. Se ha dicho que la novela picaresca, lo mejor del Siglo de Oro español, fue producto de una sociedad en crisis. Ahora, esta novela, producto de otra sociedad en crisis, la colombiana, hace parte de otro Siglo de Oro de las letras castellanas. La terrible y compleja violencia de ese país ha producido la "novela sicaresca", de la cual esta es una muestra. ¡Qué sociedad tan terrible! ¡Qué novela tan buena! Sólo las sociedades que viven intensamente sus crisis pueden producir escritores y novelas como Laura Restrepo y "Delirio".

Delirio is an almost successful book. It has two parallel story lines, and one of them (about the relatives) was of such little interest that I ended up skipping it. The other story line--about the woman suffering the delirium, confessed by a man who knew how it was caused--was good, and had great moments--interesting insights into life and life in Colombia in particular, as well as the beautiful phrasing characteristic of Restrepo when she's at her best. The two story lines may have converged in a meaningful way, but I was never hooked well enough to even want to check it out. I borrowed this book and was glad I didn't waste money on it. Much better to spend your money on Baile de la Victoria. It too had parallel story lines, only in this novel they are told and woven masterfully.
