Book Description

September 1, 2007
The New York Times bestselling author of God Don't Like Ugly and God Still Don't Like Ugly, Mary Monroe has been hailed as "a real talent" (San Jose Mercury News) and as one of today's most provocative storytellers. In her sensational new novel, a beautiful, resourceful woman is caught in a high-stakes game of money, sex and betrayal--all in the name of a better future...

Once upon a time, Christine Thurman had the perfect marriage. A girl from the wrong side of the tracks, she made good by marrying Jesse Ray Thurman and helping him build a business worth millions. Together, they were the perfect couple--attractive, successful, and deeply in love. Christine was convinced she'd spend the rest of her life by her handsome husband's side.

But twelve years later, J.R. has become obsessed with building his video store empire and is taking his wife for granted. Feeling trapped and alone in a dead-end marriage, Christine finds herself tempted by her old haunts and the people she thought she left behind long ago. Suddenly, without J.R. even realizing it, their seemingly unshakeable bond has started fraying at the seams--and Christine will do anything to break free.

Enter Wade Eddie Fisher, a bad boy with good looks from Christine's past. Wade left their hometown long ago to follow his Hollywood dreams, but now he's back, penniless, and as tempting as ever. Even though Wade is far from dependable, he offers Christine something she can't seem to resist. Soon she's immersed in a sultry affair, and before she knows it, she's concocted a scheme so risky that it promises to deliver everything she could possibly want--or shatter the lives of everyone close to her...

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Bestseller Monroe delivers what could be her wildest and most entertaining novel yet. Greed, betrayal and murder intersect as Wade Eddie Fisher, who looks like a low-income Lenny Kravitz, and Christine Thurman, the wife of super-successful video store entrepreneur J.R. Thurman, devise a plan to fake her kidnapping, collect $500,000 and get her out of her marriage. (A pre-nup would leave her with nothing if she divorced.) But after the shoddy plan is put into action and creepy thug Jason Mack comes onboard, things quickly disintegrate. J.R. offers to pay double for Christine's immediate and safe return, setting into motion among the conspirators murderous plots and double-crosses. The narrative is fun but suffers from repetitive exposition and unsympathetic characters, though their nasty (or pathetic, depending) natures create enough surprises to keep readers piqued till the end. 4.0 out of 5 stars Trouble brewing, September 28, 2007

This review is from: Deliver Me From Evil (Hardcover)
In DELIVER ME FROM EVIL, Christine, who has grown up on the wrong side of the tracks, meets and marries the man of her dreams. J.R. has big thoughts of becoming a wealthy businessman and he puts his heart and soul into growing his video company. Soon the perfect marriage is coming apart at the seams because J.R. has no time for his wife. Christine is aware, but J.R. seems oblivious in his mad pursuit of the almighty dollar. He even moves his mother, who needs intensive personal care, into his home. He, nor his family, will hear of Christine having a live-in nurse to help her. Then his brother-in-law and sister run up on hard times and move in also. J.R.'s sister has never liked Christine and even though she is in Christine's home, she lets her know it in no uncertain terms how she feels.

Wade, a former friend of Christine's, enters the picture. He is good looking and has been away in Hollywood attempting to forge a movie career. Now back in town, he and Christine resume their steamy affair. Wade knows how unhappy Christine is and he comes up with an intense scheme that will either free Christine or ruin her life. Will Christine take that chance?

DELIVER ME FROM EVIL is an enticing book of steamy love scenes, mad, crazy family dysfunction, scary scenarios and a lot of tension. Christine's life is told in flashbacks so we know her, as well as Wade, quite well. J.R., by his worship of money and family, is also well-developed. This is definitely a novel worth reading. It's hard to put down.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ending let me down!, June 20, 2008
By
This review is from: Deliver Me From Evil (Hardcover)
It took me almost a year to read this book. Everytime I picked it up, I would put it back down because the beginning didn't catch my attention. Last week I decided to give it another try, and low and behold it was pretty good. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I must say that she really disappointed me with the ending. Does this mean that there will be a part two? That would be the only viable explanation to such a weak ending. I was truly let down.

5.0 out of 5 stars (4.5 stars) Breaking Point, November 9, 2007
This review is from: Deliver Me From Evil (Hardcover)
Christine Thurman had the perfect marriage with Jesse Ray Thurman. She was a bad girl gone good after Jesse Ray married her and together they built a successful video store empire. Fast forward twelve years and Christine now feels that her life is now less than perfect. Jesse Ray is so obsessed with growing his business that he puts his wife on the back burner. Because she's not getting the attention that she deserves from her husband, Christine is forced into the arms of an old flame named Wade Eddie Fisher. Wade left the neighborhood a long time ago in search of Hollywood dreams but when they fizzled out he came back home broke as ever. But this still didn't stop him rekindling a torrid affair with a now unhappily married Christine. Things get risky when Christine comes up with a scheme that will give her everything she always wanted. But will her plan work or will it blow up in her face?

Deliver Me From Evil is a thrilling novel from Mary Monroe. Monroe takes readers on a journey into the wild mind of a woman taking desperate measures. The thing that really pulls you into this novel is how abruptly this whole story begins. One of the bizarre twists to this novel is revealed in the first few pages which was unique. The characters are rich and vivid as well. You'll actually sympathize with Christine when you see what lead her to take such extreme measures. You will also wonder why Jesse Ray couldn't be more cognizant of his wife's needs. Monroe skillfully incorporated a good dose of humor and sex into her classic trademark storytelling style that makes this a true page-turner. Deliver Me From Evil is another winner for Mary Monroe that does not disappoint.
