Book Description

May 28, 1997
Concord, Massachusetts is a picture-postcard town: birthplace of the American revolution, home of Emerson and Thoreau. Its privileged citizens guard their heritage, their wealth . . . and their secrets. Psychiatrist Harry Kline listens to those secrets. But someone thinks Harry has heard too much--and wants him silenced . . . for good.

A prominent Concord man has been cut down in a hit-and-run accident. The murder investigation zeros in on one of Harry's patients . . . and then on Harry's lover. Who is the killer? And was it really an accident . . . or something more sinister?

Harry's world is turned upside down as his personal and professional lives collide. Who can Harry--the keeper of others' secrets--tell his secrets to? To a lawyer, a priest, or a therapist? To his daughter, a friend, or a stranger . . . or the ghost of his departed wife?

Before he's through, Harry will learn his most important lesson: That evil is easy. And in its battle against goodness and mercy, evil always has a head start. . . .

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

One of the advantages of being the mass market managing editor at Ballantine is that I get to assign which production editor works on which book; therefore, I get to select which books I will work on myself. (The production editor oversees the copyediting and proofreading of the book, ensuring that everything is done correctly and on time.) I have always made sure that I work on Philip Luber's books. My first one was DELIVER US FROM EVIL, and we recently published PRAY FOR US SINNERS. I love working with him and his books; I find his protagonist, Harry Kline, to be a marvelously constructed, complicated character to whom I can relate very well. I actually feel like a reader when working on Phil's books-- I want to be surprised at every turn of the page. So I hate it when the editor tells me, "Oh you'll just love this book. In this one Harry --" Right there I cut her off and say, "Don't tell me any more! I don't want to know yet!" Making PRAY FOR US SINNERS was especially satisfying, because it was the first book we did completely electronically. Phil delivered the manuscript to me over the Internet, about ten minutes after I told him how to do it. There were a lot of little glitches, and he was incredibly patient until we worked out all the kinks. We e-mailed each other so many times that we sort of became part of each other's e-mail groups, exchanging jokes and other random thoughts. He's a terrific guy, and an extremely entertaining writer. I am eagerly awaiting the electronic transmission of his next book, HAVE MERCY ON US. It's due to me in a few months, but I'm not sure I can wait that long. . .

Great mystery and an interesting cast of characters. Luber's novel showcases his writing talent, along with his ability to spin a great mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars A FINE READ, October 16, 2000

Philip Luber hits his stride in the second of his Harry Kline series. The characters are well drawn, the writing is crisp, and the plot moves briskly. I owe a vote of thanks to a friend on the Amazon Discussion Board who recommended this series. I hope he reaches the audience due him.

The picture postcard Concord MA serves him well as a backdrop. I particularly like his characterization of Police Chief Korvich. He and Harry play well against one another, and for once the author doesn't deal our hero all the good lines. The book has crackling humor, a bit on the wry and dry side that I enjoyed very much. Mystery fans, give yourself a treat and give Harry Kline a read. If you enjoy Jonathan Kellerman, this book is a must.
