Book Description

April 1, 2011
An old love letter found in the glove compartment of a young woman's inherited 1972 Volkswagen propels her to leave her life in Los Angeles and go to the small town of Capitola, California. There her dream of finding the writer of the letter leads her on an unexpected journey that changes her life forever.

Claire James, age twenty-three, is ready to make it on her own.  When she's fired from her job as a waitress and subsequently kicked out of her sister's home, she sees it as an opportunity to start over.  But even before moving, a thirty-five-year-old love letter written to her mother keeps Claire stuck in the past.  Michael Thompson, a middle-aged real estate agent, wants to keep the past where it belongs--at least until his grown daughter is married.  But, then a young woman comes to town . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Kyle (The Christian Girl's Guide to Style) moves from tween girl writing in her debut adult novel with the unlikely scenario of a 35- year-old love letter found by 23-year-old Claire James in her recently deceased mother's '72 Volkswagen glove compartment. After Claire loses her waitress job and is kicked out of her sister's apartment, she heads to Capitola, Calif., in search of the author of the love letter, having become obsessed with ferreting him out. After a series of clunky mishaps, Claire lands a job and a place to stay, where she conveniently meets up with her mother's long-lost love. Part mystery, part comedy, the story places Claire in the middle of numerous unlikely emotionally charged situations with the residents of Capitola. Determined to unravel the secret behind the love letter, Claire doesn't give up until the truth is told. Kyle's interweaving of so many characters is implausible and contrived, and she fails to connect readers emotionally with Claire and her search. (Apr.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Unanswered Questions Will Keep You Reading April 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
New author Sherry Kyle will keep you turning pages in Delivered with Love. Young Claire James has faced tough times, particularly with the recent illness and death of her mother. When she loses her job and is sent packing by her alcoholic brother-in-law, Claire sets out on her own. Led to the seaside town of Capitola, California, by an old love letter she finds in the glove compartment of the 1972 VW Bug that had been her mother's car, Claire suddenly finds her life being propeled along by a series of amazing events -- events she will eventually come to understand are being orchestrated by a God who loves her and is drawing her to Himself. As the story unfolded, I couldn't wait to find out how the author would resolve all the questions her story presented: Who wrote the letter? Why had Claire's mother kept the letter for 30 years? What were the secrets in Michael's past that were so troubling? Would Claire ever be able to accept her past and trust in the power of love? I look forward to more works by this author and hope she will give us a more detailed picture of the setting she obviously loves. Capitola sounds like a wonderful place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great new novel from a debut novelist March 25, 2011
Format:Paperback
Delivered With Love--delivers--romance, suspense, conflict, humor and terrific true-to-life characters. Every one of them has something special that drew me in. And the setting, Capitola, California, is a lovely backdrop to this heart-warming story that will keep you turning the pages. A great start for debut novelist Sherry Kyle.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's Okay. December 4, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is okay. I didn't realize though, how very religious it was going to be. It seemed every other page was "God provides", "God loves you", "Have faith" - ETC This didn't start until about the middle way through the book. I had to fight to read the rest of it, because it was just so unrealistic. There is no way that Claire would meet ALL of these people who had so much faith in God - and the characters they didn't seem realistic at all. Don't get me wrong, I am religious, as well. Just I think this book went way too over the top. And it very much rushed the end of the book. I think this author could have done so much better. Would I read it again? No. Did I feel like I wasted all that time reading it after I finished it? Yes.

Despite a simplistic and predictable storyline, this book is a decent page turner. The poor editing and punctuation errors (kindle version) were quite distracting at times. Read more

A lot of this book felt wildly improbable... but I still was engaged by the characters, felt for those struggling with their past and their futures, and enjoyed the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very intriguing from the start
The book kept me interested from the very beginning, I finished it in 3 evenings of reading. I was disappointed in the end, I guess it left it open for a sequel.
