Editorial Reviews

If you are talking about today's top European heavy metal acts, then the discussion will most certainly involve Germany's Primal Fear. Former Gamma Ray vocalist Ralf Scheepers and bassist/vocalist Mat Sinner, two of the most respected German metal musicians, founded the band in late 1997. With nine studio albums released, two live releases and a Best Of compilation, Primal Fear are certainly one of the most beloved and respected Heavy Metal bands around the globe. Their last studio album 'Unbreakable' was their highest chart entry in Germany at Position 31 and charted in 7 other countries.

'Delivering The Black' combines the strongest elements of the band with a well-balanced typical Primal Fear trademark riff-vibe, crushing songs and some very ambitious musical journeys. The centerpiece of the album is the two epic tracks 'When Death Comes Knocking' and the 10 minute opus 'One Night In December', spiced with big orchestral arrangements and complex sound designs.

Classic and ultra-fresh Primal Fear riff-rockers like the title track, the album opener 'King For A Day' or the groove monsters 'Alive And On Fire' and 'Road To Asylum' hit the bulls-eye just like the untamed speed killer 'Rebel Fraction. The outstanding ballad 'Born With A Broken Heart' shows a new side of Primal Fear with an acoustic guitar vibe and the addition of Liv Kristine (Leaves' Eyes) on backing vocals.

Primal Fear are about to release their strongest album ever: 'Delivering The Black'.

CD/DVD Deluxe edition includes two extra bonus tracks and DVD with 3 music videos

5.0 out of 5 stars Delivering the Metal! January 30, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Primal Fear is the consummate heavy metal band – their brand of classic power metal is timeless and they do what they do extremely well. And while they have been around for quite some time now, this release, which is a pretty diverse collection of songs, may be one of the best they’ve cranked out in years. The cutting guitars that open up “King For A Day” really set the tone for the entire recording, which is full of wonderful riffs and vibrant shred solos. And Ralf Scheepers just keeps getting better and better – his vocals on this release definitely a highlight. His solo album from a few years back brought him a bit more notoriety on the world stage but it is amazing to me more people haven’t taken notice. With Mat Sinner producing and Jacob Hansen mixing the sound couldn’t get much better. All the songs are really good but the metal anthems “Alive & On Fire” and “Never Pray For Justice” scream with metal conviction. And “Road To Asylum” is an obliterating tune, which along with the crushing title track really bring it. “Born With A Broken Heart” bleeds passion (the lone power ballad here) and “When Death Comes Knocking” is a great mid-tempo rocker that reminds me of that old Queensryche vibe – these two slower songs really showcasing Scheepers’ vocal prowess. It’s all good here, it’s all metal … excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite by them January 31, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I own all their discs and this is my favorite. Most of their others had a couple of clunkers on them but not this one. The drumming on this one is fantastic along with the production. You must get the deluxe set because the two bonus tracks are just as good. Born With a Broken Heart might be their best ballad they ever did. It is hard to pick a favorite because the disc is that good. Buy it because you won't be disappointed.

Delivering the black is the best PRIMAL FEAR album since Black Sun. From 2004 - 2009 they dropped off notably and created some weak to medicore albums. While there may have been a decenttrack or two on those middle albums I was always left wanting more. 2012’s Unbreakable was a good course correction but still lacked a bit in consistency and, while better than the previous 3 albums, was average. This new piece kicks serious arse. This new production takes me back to the roots of PRIMAL FEAR’s first 4 albums; outstanding twin guitars creating neck damaging riffs and exquisite solos, powerful vocals by Scheepers, exceptionally strong drumming, and excellent mid-tempo song structure. There are always the obligatory comparisons to JUDAS PRIEST. I suppose comparisons to Painkiller are valid. And clearly it’s the same genre along with new ACCEPT, PARAGON, and the like. There is not a weak track to be found although there is some variation in style. For example the apocalyptic One Night in December reminds me of something (very heavy) from a TSO release. This music is what it is; potent well-crafted traditional heavy metal. It is not revolutionary, it is not ground breaking, it’s just an excellent example of this genre played at a very high level. Nicely done, I look forward to seeing them live.

"DELIVERING THE BLACK" ROCKS FROM START TO FINISH!!! PRIMAL FEAR ARE SEASONED VETERANS OF POWER/HEAVY METAL AND THEY HAVE RELEASED A MONSTER OF AN ALBUM! YOU DON'T HAVE TO TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, BUT THIS IS TOP NOTCH MODERN HEAVY METAL FOLKS! IT HAS THE TRADITIONAL PRIMAL FEAR SOUND THAT YOU WOULD EXPECT OOZING OUT FROM EVERY ANGLE! (IN MY OPINION)......THIS IS THE BEST ALBUM SINCE 2004'S "DEVIL'S GROUND!". PRIMAL FEAR STILL HAVE TRICKS UP THEIR SLEEVE AND THEY ARE RELEASING SOME SUPRISINGLY AWESOME METAL IN THIS TIME AND ERA, THE BOTTOM LINE IS......THIS ALBUM ROCKS!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is my primal fear from within... January 29, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A rocky road, speed metal sundae with whipped cream, chopped peanuts and a fresh, juice-dripping cherry on top! Yummy from start to finish (I lick the bottom of the bowl when stuff like this gets in my face). Favorites include "When Death Comes Knocking" and "Born with a Broken Heart". This one is going to make allot of "Best of..." lists. Nice way to start the year in metal. I'll have seconds!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what we want from Primal Fear. March 8, 2014

PRIMAL FEAR
"Delivering The Black" Deluxe Edition CD/DVD

Monologue
-----
Primal Fear consists of one of the genre's most powerful vocalists in Ralf Scheepers with two of the most respected musicians on the planet, bassist Mat Sinner and master guitarist Magnus Karlson. These three surrounds themselves with 5 year veteran Alex Beyrodt on guitar and powerhouse drummer Randy Black. This is the same lineup from 2012's "Unbreakable" release.

1st Impressions.
-----
While the music inside is always the basis for any CD review, the packaging is essential in making a complete and accurate representation of any bands release. The cover artwork is eye catching. While I am not a fan of digipak packaging (I'm a jewel case kind of guy) I have to say the overall presentation here is absolutely spot-on. The booklet has all the lyrics, beautiful imaging throughout and is printed on a glossy high grade stock. It looks as menacing as the music within.

The Music
-----
The opening notes of "King For A Day" blast through the speakers as a warning that this is not a release for the faint of heart, it's full-on metal. Vocalist Ralf Scheepers was a finalist for the Judas Priest vocalist spot all those years ago for good reason, he sounds strikingly similar to Priests' Rob Halford and he wears this badge of honor proudly. His voice has lost none of the power that he displayed on Primal Fears’ debut back in 1998. If anything, Scheepers sounds better and his performance here easily matches anything he has done previously. "Rebel Faction" is straight ahead classic Metal in the Manowar vain complete with gang vocals complementing the anthem style chorus.
