4.0 out of 5 stars Delivering Hope
This was a totally insightful look into surrogacy. Every question one would want to ask someone about surrogacy is answered in a humorous, REAL and inspiring way. The book takes you through the beginning of the thought process all the way to the end. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next; how would things turn out? would it take? would the baby be ok? would Pam...

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful and helpful, but not an especially good read.
I got good information about surrogacy from this book, but the rambling style and editing problems were very distracting. The book takes you through the beginning of the thought process all the way to the end. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next; how would things turn out? would it take? would the baby be ok? would Pam want to keep the baby? And how would her husband and kids respond? It is all creatively written for you to understand her every thought. An Excellent read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delivering generosity, patience and hope, July 19, 2009
This review is from: Delivering Hope: The Extraordinary Journey of a Surrogate Mom (Paperback)
This book tells a delighful story but also takes away the mystery surrounding surrogacy. Pamela so honestly writes of her experience that her book reads like a conversation you could be having with her at her kitchen table. It's a wonderful story full of little lessons about generosity, patience and hope.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Story...Delivering Hope, July 19, 2009

I loved this book! It is a beautiful and inspiring story about surrogacy, and about the many emotions and shared decisions both couples had to make prior to and throughout the pregnancy. When I started the book, I thought..."I could do that. I could be a surrogate.", but after reading it, I realized that it is WAY more complicated than I had ever imagined and that really, only a small percentage of people could pull off an amazing miracle like the one described in this book by Pam MacPhee.

I got good information about surrogacy from this book, but the rambling style and editing problems were very distracting. Any first-hand account is obviously made better by personal anecdotes, but this one was so full of stories that weren't related to surrogacy (the author goes into detail about a Dodgers game she attends after a visit to the fertility clinic, including a long explanation of what she ate and how she managed to avoid cheering for the home team) that I found myself simply skimming the book for the info I really wanted. Not to mention misspelled words, more than once - was the book copyedited? What's missing is research; I would have appreciated at least a nod to the experience of other moms who had this experience and some details from doctors and counselors about what is involved in surrogacy. It wasn't a terrible book, but my expectations were higher.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read for anyone considering becoming a Gestational Carrier, August 24, 2010
This review is from: Delivering Hope: The Extraordinary Journey of a Surrogate Mom (Paperback)
Delivering Hope: The Exraordinary Journey of a Surrogate Mom

Delivering Hope: The Exraordinary Journey of a Surrogate Mom by Pamela MacPhee is truly inspiring. Although her story starts in 2000, little has changed within the surrogacy world especially for those carrying for their relatives. As Pam is telling her own story she is also sharing the very important steps needed to start and complete such a venture. She very candidly tells of her medical and psychological screenings, legal proceedings, the medications and embryo transfer as well as her relationship with her cousin and his wife plus other family and friends. Although not every woman who has ever experienced surrogacy has the same tale to tell, any reader will get an exceptional overview of all that surrogacy entails. Being a past Gestational Carrier myself (twice), I can honestly say that each surrogacy experience has it's own challenges and rewards!

4.0 out of 5 stars Honest storytelling from an amateur writer, June 10, 2010

I have been giving a lot of thought recently to carrying my cousin's baby. She and her husband are infertile. I was researching surrogacy on the internet, and I was getting frustrated that most of the information didn't really delve into either the specific medical procedures nor did it cover personal stories of surrogacy. I felt like this book could help me decide what path to follow.

The author tells an honest account of how she felt at each stage in the journey. That helped me a lot. So I thank her for her candor.

Conversely, this is not an interestingly written book. At times it rambles or is cheesy. But I didn't expect it to be a great work of literature. If you are in my position or just curious about surrogacy, I think it's interesting. But it is not as compelling as a book from a professional writer.

I especially appreciate her honesty about what it was like to give up the baby. That's what I am most concerned about.

Also, since the author did this, surrogacy has changed a great deal, and I think there are not as many injections required. So that information is not up to date, but it was her experience so it is what it is.

Thank you for publishing such a unique story.

Surrogacy is totally demystified in this honest, heartfelt account of a woman's journey to help her cousin become a father after his wife's cancer strips her of the ability to nurture a pregnancy. Pamela MacPhee writes exactly what she feels, and the effect is an up close and personal view of an extremely private matter. Like the author, I have three of my own children, but I now feel as though I know exactly (well, almost) what it would be like to be a surrogate. The book takes the reader through the process from start to finish -- from the author's idea to make the offer of surrogacy to the intended parents (ready or not!) all the way to the intended family's first christmas card. If you are considering surrogacy or are simply curious about the process, this book is an excellent choice. And, if you are not considering surrogacy, you may just decide to go out and do something totally selfless and meaningful after you finish this read.
