Book Description

Develop cost-effective, long-term solutions for packetized voice Analysts agree that within the next decade virtually all telecommunication traffic will travel over packet networks. Should your packetized voice be delivered over layer 2 networks such as ATM or frame relay, or over layer 3 IP networks? What are the challenges associated with ATM and frame relay? Drawing upon years of practical and research experience with both voice over ATM and voice over frame relay, the authors consider the advantages and disadvantages of frame relay and ATM versus IP networks. The book covers engineering requirements in depth and suggests likely interim steps for scaling up to a voice over data network by providing:
* A telephony tutorial for network managers
* Comparative assessments of voice over frame relay, ATM, and the Internet
* Overviews of all the enabling technologies involved
* In-depth coverage of voice characteristics, compression standards, and QoS
* An extensive case study illustrating the pros and cons of voice over data
* Guidelines to help you decide when (or whether) to invest in voice over data technology, and how to choose the best type for your organization.

From the Publisher

Technology now exists for corporations to run their telecommunications over their data lines. This has exciting implications in terms of cost, efficiency, security, and quality. A host of new products will be reaching the market in the next year. But for all the hype, it's not going to be easy. This book explains what the potential investment will be in terms of money and technology. It also offers an extensive case study exploring both benefits and drawbacks and provides informed overviews of the enabling technologies involved.

2.0 out of 5 stars In brief this is a summary of ITU specifications, August 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Delivering Voice over Frame Relay and ATM (Hardcover)
Although some may find this book to thier taste. It offers very little more than a rehash of the ITU specifications for ATM, speech encoding etc... The good parts of the book cover basic telephony, ATM and frame relay. The bad parts are almost copies of the ITU specifications. When these specifications ( i.e. series G, H, I ) get difficult the auther fails to explain any of complex issues in less complicated terms. The good thing is, if you do not know which ITU spec covers which subject you can find out from this book. Constant reference is made to the authors other book on voice over IP. I think that both books cover almost the same topics. In fact alot of the sections are almost the same. So beware! This may not be for you. The voice over IP book by the same author covers more ground and is a little better. As a telecomms engineer in an international company I have to design and implement a number of access and back haul systems. A good background is necessary in each subject/design area. As an engineer I found this book's useful content to be about 50%.
