Mostly good topics but not well described,
By A Customer
This review is from: Delivering Voice over IP Networks (Hardcover)
The book promises to cover many subjects in-depth. True, many subjects are covered - e.g. there is yet an other IP overview - but unfortunately I can't say the descriptions are very clear. The frequent use of acronyms, some of which were new to me even the subjects were familiar, doesn't make the reading any easier. I found the voice traffic modelling and delay simulation results interesting but I don't understand why to cover the complex mathematics so thoroughly when most of the book only skims the subjects. The reason why the human resources outsourcing via web was selected as a case study remains a mystery to me. The relatioship to Voice over IP is quite distant.

Simply explained and easy to follow,

I really liked this book. As I am still learning VoIP field. This book explains in very simple terms clearlly. Compared to Marcus Goncalves's "voice Over IP networks", this book was more informative and easy to follow. This is a great book for students and also for novices!!!

Not up-to-date information,

This review is from: Delivering Voice over IP Networks (Hardcover)
This book was published in 1998, and that should tell you plenty about what is covered in it. Doesn't cover much of the new protocols such as WRR, DSCP, MGCP, policing, NBAR etc. etc. Where on the other had it goes into great detail on vocoding and different packetized speech traffic models.

The book covered a wide range of related topics quite well. The mathematics was a little daunting. But overall the book presented the necessary information to allow you to grasp Voice over IP basics.

Excellent book for CCIE Written Examination,
By A Customer
This review is from: Delivering Voice over IP Networks (Hardcover)
Really enjoyed the sections on H.323 and H.225 protocols. Was able to thoroughly understand the difference between Real Time Protocol and Real Time Control Protocol. Do you know where this protocol lays in the OSI model? What is the difference between Random Early Detection and Weighted Random Early Detection? If you're not sure about the answers, then you need this book. Cleared up alot of questions I had on the CCIE Written Exam 350-001. Would also recommend "Internetworking TCP/IP" Author: Douglas Comer.

Disappointing,
This review is from: Delivering Voice over IP Networks (Hardcover)
In our opinion, this book is more useful as a reference tool than a practical guide. The authors obviously have a high opinion of themselves, and this shows through in their style of writing.Nevertheless, the book successfully documents the quantifiable aspects of the technology; rare in a VoIP book. Two chapters deal with voice coding issues in very great detail, and this alone makes the book a useful addition to a technical library.

Be Prepared,
By A Customer
This review is from: Delivering Voice over IP Networks, 2nd Edition (Hardcover)
We all know it's just a matter of time before VoIP gets ramped up, so I was really pleased to see this book on the shelf. It's best to be prepared-that's what I say. This book will definitely give you a leg up.
