Delkin needs better quality control on their NiMH batteries,
By
This review is from: Delkin Devices DD/AA-4PK-R29 Extended Power Rechargeable AA Batteries (Electronics)
I bought two 4-packs of these Delkin AA NiMH batteries based on their claimed capacity of 2900 mAh. As soon as I received them I charged them up using a pair of LaCrosse BC-900 battery chargers in TEST mode. According to the battery charger LCD screens, none of these Delkin batteries would charge up more than about 2050 mAh. I contacted the company I bought them from about their lack of stated capacity, and they replied that NiMH batteries need to be drained and recharged several times before they develop their full capacity.
I have since drained each set of four AA batteries in my digital camera and recharged them several times. I saw an increased capacity in most of the Delkin AA batteries up to around 2350 mAh. But there's at least one AA in each four-pack that gradually loses its ability to accept a charge. I have now had to return two of the eight Delkins for replacement. Kudoes to the company for promptly replacing the defective ones, but I'm chagrined that defective Delkin NiMH AAs would be so common. With a failure rate of 25%, I won't be buying any more Delkin products.

A conflict of expectations,

I bought these Delkin 2900mah's last March expecting them to last longer than their Sony 2500 predecessors.
The Sony's were good for 5 weeks between charging in my lcd headlamp I use when cycling the dark morning hours. When they arrived I charged them up and they conked out after 3 weeks. I know the first couple of charges you have to allow for lack of power. But I find myself still having to charge them every 3 weeks for over 7 months now. A dissapointing purchase.

I don't have access to the testing device used by the earlier review, but I'm equally disappointed by these cells. It's my definite impression that the Delkin 2900s do not last nearly as long in my digital cameras as Sanyo 2700s, nor do they have as good a shelf life.

I have several of these batteries, and I am overall very pleased with them. They perform excellently in both my camera and my flash gun.
However, I have a friend who owns a battery shop. I was asking him about what AA batteries were the best, and he showed me some 2200mah batteries. I said I had 2900mah ones and he said bring one in. I did, and he tested it on a battery testing machine(the many thousand dollar kind that actually tells you what the batteries are capable of, and what they're rated at). turns out that these batteries are rated at 2000mah for the ones we tested. Dont let that stop you, they are superb batteries, but they are definitely mislabelled.

Exaggerated battery capacity - More like 2500mAh,

Those Delkin Devices DD/AA-4PK-R29 Extended Power Rechargeable AA Batteries are advertised to have capacity of '2900mAh', which is among the highest for rechargeable AA NiMH cells. Actual measured capacity, however, is much less impressive.
I have tested a set of 4 new Delkin '2900mAh' cells, using my La Crosse BC-900 Battery Charger/Analyzer. After subjecting those cells through THREE complete Charge/Discharge cycles, the average capacity is still only 2405mAh (minimum 2300, maximum 2520). I then put those cells through the 'Break-in' operation on my Maha MH-C9000 Advanced Battery Charger/Analyzer, which took 39 hours to complete. Even after all that work, the average capacity only improved marginally to 2502mAh (min 2450, max 2530). Based on my test results, those Delkin rechargeable batteries should really be rated as '2500mAh' at best. Note that previously, I have tested many name-brand low-self-discharge NiMH cells, such as Sanyo Eneloop and Sony Cycle Energy Pre-Charged AA. They all can meet or exceed their rated capacities, after just ONE recharge/discharge cycle. Currently, this product is being offered at 50% higher price than name-brand batteries, based purely on its highly inflated capacity number. Unfortunately, this is a common practice for off-brand rechargeable battery makers.

I have an Olympus digital camera that really sucks batteries dry--except for these. I had one set, and purchased these for backup. I'll never use anything else!

Worked great at first, but experience many "unchargable" duds in the bunch even from a fresh pack. Last less than one year mostly.

The only problem I encountered was not the battery, but the charging system I used with this particular battery. I use a 15-minute quick charger, I suggest you utilize a slow charger, or run the batteries a second time in the quick charger. I contacted the manufacturer and they were very fast in returning my call and stated to return them for a replacement set, only to learn it was my charger. So far, they have worked exceptionally well. Tony P. Bel Air, MD
