Good accessory, looks good, buttons are all functional and the shade in the LCD helps a lot when shooting outside. The only flaw is that it makes the access to the on-off lever a bit hard.
February 2009 update : It still looks like new. I didn't experience any kind of sand accumulation underneath the cover, not scratches. I use my camera outdoors and in harsh environments such as corn fields in Iowa during the summer (PhD work) or vacations in the Brazilian summer (including shooting on beaches with high humidity and plenty of sand flying around). The buttons still work great. My only change to the first review is that on the beach under the bright sun the shade helps but it is still hard to review pictures. You'd better know how to use your camera =) April 2010 update: still works great.

Mine broke the day after I installed it on my 40D, just by opening it the right side spring popped out and this is not user-repairable.
Many other Delkin shades seem more durable but this one for the 40D does not seem to be made as well. I will be waiting to see if Hoodman produces a pop-shade for the 40D. The eye-piece and buttons are identical to Canon so no complaints there. All buttons worked.

I have one of these on my Canon Rebel 350D and it fits perfectly. The one designed for the 40D shifts constantly . The door is useless and really does not help you see anything better in strong light. Also you can get a nasty scratch or cut if you bump you face into the open door.
Remove the door and you have a good LCD protector. The 40D has a 3 inch LCD screen. Delkin failed to design this to grab the back of the 40D properly. It shifts so much that the buttons go out of alignment and do not function when you press them. It ends up being only a very expensive LCD protector but a nuisance otherwise.

Very Clever little device,

For the money, it's hard not to go with one of these. Obviously daylight will affect the vision through the 3" LCD and if you use live mode as I do a lot, it is extremely helpful. If it was $200, I'd question the value, but at the price, it's cheap enough to try and see how it does for you.

It damages the LCD when sands get behind it,
This review is from: Delkin Devices DC40D-P Pop-Up Shade for Canon 40D (Electronics)
I bought a used 40D on eBay with this thing. First of all, the right flap is broken off. Secondly, I found a lot of fine sands behind it, and when it rubbed against the LCD screen edge, it created a lot of deep scratches along the edges. Although the center part of the LCD is not affected, the scratches still look very bad. It's definitely worse than not having it at all. I would suggest anyone who has this thing to find some double sided tape, cut some thin strips to fix it on the LCD to avoid rubbing. Otherwise you will cry.

I have had this product for over a year now and absolutely love it. It is great for previewing photos when you are in sunlight (without having to awkwardly shade the viewer with your hand). Highly recommend.

This is an excellent, quality product, very well designed and sturdily constructed. The build quality is very high and I couldn't be happier with the product. It fits and functions perfectly on my Canon 40D digital SLR camera.

While this device does provide protection for the LCD screen, it provides little advantage for viewing images in sunlight conditions. The most annoying thing is you cannot frame shots through the eye piece/view finder while the shade is open. Consequently, you are constantly opening and closing the shade to check the LCD. Not at all what I had hoped for in a pop-up shade. Not recommended.

If you are like me, you must feel a bit of a chill as your expensive DSLR hangs out with the lovely LCD screen exposed to various potential hazards. While this shade is ostensibly to permit easier viewing in bright sunlight ( a task it performs admirably), I tend to value it for the protection it offers the screen. Well designed and priced.

Better Than Expected!,

The Delkin Pop-up Shade for the Canon 40D has surpassed my expectations for a product of this type. First, once it's installed, you barely notice that it's there and it just feels like its part of the camera. The construction is top-notch and the functionality is solid also. But the feature I like most, and one that I was not expecting, is the ability to detatch just the pop-up cover but the see-through cover stays in place to continue providing protection to your LCD display. This only makes sense because at night there really is no need to use the pop-up feature since there is no sun to obscure your viewing of the LCD. The last shade I had (from HoodMAN) did not have a removable pop-up.
To sum it all up, this is a product that I feel any Canon owner (or camera owner) can make good use of and benefit from. Excellent product! |
