It's big, bright, fast, beautiful and did I mention it's big? I mean two side-by-side magnified A4 documents big. The $1100 price is great too compared to other 30" models.

The reason why this monitor is considered obsolete by Dell is the complaints from videophiles about its lack of connectivity options. Specifically, dual-link DVI is the only way in. So, if you are planning on connecting game machines or BlueRay drives or HD cable boxes via HDMI, you are out of luck. But, why would you want to do that? Even full HD video only goes up to 1920x1080. This monitor does 2560x1600. It makes a lot more sense to pay $800 for a 42" 1080p LCD TV, which is bigger and better for viewing video anyway. This is an ultra-high-resolution monitor, pure and simple, and I love it for doing a good job there.

As the channel runs low on stock of this monitor, the Gateway XHD3000 30" Widescreen HD LCD Monitor becomes a better value. The latter, however, does not employ the S-IPS panel from LG, which is generally considered the best and most expensive LCD technology as of 2008. This is another reason why some 30" monitors are still a good buy in my mind even though 24" models are selling for under $300 nowadays. Those cheap monitors use TN panels, with poor color, contrast and viewing angles. Smaller S-IPS monitors (e.g. HP LP2475W 24in LCD Monitor 1920X1200 and

I bought this monitor as soon as I upgraded my computer. I'm currently using a ATI HD 5850 video card, so the 2560x1600 resolution is amazing. The main reason I went with this monitor was the IPS panel and the 16:10 ratio, which I prefer to the 27" 16:9. With something this big, you really need an IPS panel or you'll have some serious color problems on the sides. The 16:10 ratio means you get more space for toolbars on the top and bottom of your screen, but there will be some black bars on the top and bottom if your playing a standard DVD.

I have a blu-ray player in this computer, and it's just stunning to see the quality on this large screen. The first blu-ray I bought was Chronos, also available on amazon, and it's just incredible. If you look really closely, you don't see the pixels of the screen, you see the texture of the film! Simply awesome.

I do some graphics work but mostly 3d animation, so my main concern is size(for manipulating objects) over color reproduction quality. But I haven't noticed any inconsistencies with color reproduction compared to my other 23" IPS panel monitor that I have sitting right next to it.

This is a great monitor choice for the Mac Pro using the dual-link DVI without any of the gloss, glare issues. The 30in. screen size looks twice as large as a 24in. display and saves the hassle of connecting 2 monitors. The resolution of 2560x1600 and 0.25mm pixel-pitch is excellent for Aperture, iPhoto and iMovie work flows and make all my DSLR photos and videos pop. Runs silent and cool. I highly recommend it.
