This is a good player, October 8, 2009
This review is from: Dell DJ 30 30GB Gen 2 Digital Jukebox MP3 Player (Silver)
This is a simple player. It only plays music, no videos, no frills. If you want that, it's for you.
With decent ear phones and mp3s at a high bitrate it sounds wonderful. I recommend the Altec Lansing UHP336 Snugfit In-ear Earphones. With these it's as if you are in a cozy world of music. They block out most annoying sounds so it's just you and the tunes.
It's a shame Dell stopped making these. You can snag one for an extremely good price and once you get the Dell DJ software set up it's easy to use. Plus you can buy mp3s from Amazon in high quality and load them on your machine and enjoy.
It's a bit heavy, but that's OK. It makes it seem sturdy and solid. It's easy to use and it can store a lot of music.
It's a good alternative to an Ipod.

The price may be nice, but save up for something better., June 9, 2010
This review is from: Dell DJ 30 30GB Gen 2 Digital Jukebox MP3 Player (Silver)
All I wanted was something to play music. I don't care about games and apps or photos or watching movies on a tiny screen. I thought this would be a great deal for a little over a hundred bucks, but it wasn't. Skip to the last paragraph if you want to cut to the chase, but I feel compelled to give some background.
My first MP3 player was a 30gb Creative Zen, which had problems. Specifically, my computer quit recognizing it when I didn't update the firmware. However, I couldn't update the firmware until I could get the computer to recognize it. You can imagine how maddening such a Catch-22 can be. I won't describe the absurd lengths I had to go to in fixing this.
I wanted another 30gb player, but I wasn't anxious to give my business to Creative again. Unfortunately, in the 3 years that had passed, the market had changed. If you want at least 30 gigs, your choices are much fewer. Zune and Ipod managed to drive many competitors out of business, and I didn't want to go with those on principle. Those still in the game only seem to offer 4 or 8 gig models.
When I discovered the Dell, I was excited. Yes, it was old tech. Yes, it looked like a clunky dinosaur. But it had what I wanted for a good price. If it lasted 3 years, I'd be happy.
So it arrives and it doesn't include a wall charger. You can charge the battery off the computer, but only if there is at least at 25% charge in it. There wasn't. In fact, the manual says don't plug it into the computer until you've charged it. Another maddening Catch-22. Only I have little patience for this now. Yes, Dell will probably send me a charger for free if I called and griped, but I suspect I'll discover that the battery is crapped out anyway. I'm now of the mind that you've got one shot. And I now realize: as much as I dislike Apple on principle, there is a reason the Ipod is king.

so far, a GREAT little player!, May 16, 2010
This review is from: Dell DJ 30 30GB Gen 2 Digital Jukebox MP3 Player (Silver)
Well, I bought this REFURBISHED Dell DJ30 a week ago and I am really happy with it. I have quite an extensive CD collection almost 400 CD's ( in my old Sony 400 disc CD changer) I was able to load all 6,000 songs onto this little "musical wonder" and I can now take them with me in the truck without all the hassle of messing with the CD's
I had always wanted to get an MP3 player or an IPOD device but the cost was just too high for me, but when I noticed a seller on Amazon who had this Dell listed for just 39.00 ( plus another 11.00 shipping) I just had to jump at the chance! The item arrived as stated "factory refurbished" and the seller listed the item as having "no driver disc" so I had to go onto Dell's website to download the software and drivers, not a big deal but I had a tough time (2+ hours) figuring out how to make it all work. EVENTUALLY I got all the correct firmware and drivers to load and SHAZAM! I am now enjoying the convenience of the modern age of electronics!
With that being said, I must note that this player is around 6 years old! Thats right, it is technology from 2004 (already obsolete as the tech world goes!) but hey, this player is still a solid value for someone who just wants to play music... no bells and whistles, no video, no internet connection, no remote car starter system... just a GREAT little MP3 player and at a great price! At 39.00 I recomend you get one if the seller has them again, I might have bought the last two, yes, I bought another one for a backup! I will update my review in a month to let everyone know how it is working out!
