It comes loaded with a NON-VALIDATED copy of Windows XP. It also does NOT have any slots for micro chips or Sandisks. The software it comes with is: "Open Office" software, AVG free anti-virus, "Burn Aware" freebie, Adware Pro, and Internet Explorer. And that's basically it. You will have to load a LOT of programs and updates. I uninstalled a lot of it and reinstalled the programs I'm used too running. So far so good and it's a lot faster than my old HP Presario that this PC is replacing. Odd thing though, this PC still has a floppy drive for those old 4 inch plastic disks that we used years ago. I don't know if it still works - I have some of those type disks around so maybe I'll insert one and see if the drive reads it. The CD drive works. I haven't tried burning a CD yet but if I have a problem later I'll update this review.
The ports are all USB so if you have old keyboards or mouses that have the round connections they won't work. A very cheap keyboard and mouse ships with this unit and I am using the keyboard right now. The letter "o" key is sort of depressed more than the other keys but it works alright. The PC recognizes new hardware nicely and my remote mouse works great.
It seems very fast (at least to me since my old PC was dreadfully slow) but I don't know if it's fast enough for gaming.Read more ›
The motherboard is a Dell custom model in that standard types of heat sink / cooler units will NOT bolt in correctly with it. You are stuck using Dell's fan + shrouded heat sink. My model had the stock aluminum heat sink intended for the P4 processor. It is NOT efficient or intended for the Pentium D dual core as these run really, really hot. The J9761 copper core heat sink with three heat pipes was issued by Dell for the Pentium D GX620's, and if you want to game with this computer, you will need this heat sink.
I added another stick of ram to take me to 3 gb, and also tossed in a GT620 Nvidia PCIe graphic card for cheap. The GT620 Nvidia works without issue using the stock 305 Dell power supply this computer uses.
Finally, heat really is an issue with this case. It had a single fan only - the one intended for the heat sink on the CPU. To cure this I added a PCI slot fan (Antec dual fan) unit to keep my video card cool, and slugged in another Antec 120mm fan at the rear of the CPU heat sink shroud housing. I mounted it so that the fan blew directly on the copper heat sink, with the normal shroud fan that's set at the front of the case *reversed* so that all of the air flow blows out the front of the case grille.
This did the trick and dropped my CPU temperature down to 43-45 C while under a heavy processing load, such as running Elder Scrolls Skyrim.
Gaming performance is now acceptable with League of Legends, Skyrim, and Dragon age all running at generous graphic settings (most high with low quality shadows) at the 45-58 FPS framerate range.Read more ›
The front panel beneath the DVD drive was punched out and inside the computer itself. I knew something was wrong when I took the computer out of the bubble tape and it was rattling inside. I had to remove the cover on the side of the computer, locate it, and guiding my hands around the DVD drive, manually punch it back in place.
As for the back, it was missing one of the waffle-covers completely. Nowhere located in the box it arrived in or anywhere else. I can purchase one of these myself but it shouldn't be missing any at all ! Currently I cut out a piece of thick envelope paper and taped it over the area so dust won't get in.
The computer also arrived in massive bubble tape, but that only further led me to believe it was damaged before it arrived and not the part of the fed ex people and since the box was in perfect condition arriving, no dents or anything.
This computer also had a 3 & 1/2 inch drive ! I'm not sure if that's a benefit or a tribute to just how old this computer is. I'm a little concerned that I got the right computer as it is not shown on the illustration nor mentioned in the description.
THERE ARE NO ROUND CONNECTORS FOR YOUR MOUSE OR KEYBOARD. Only 6-USB plugs in the back. If your mouse or keyboard uses a round connector, you cannot use it with this computer at all ! Fortunately I pulled out one of my USB keyboards out of storage or I wouldn't have been able to use this computer without buying one.
Always check to make sure the computer you are getting has these since apparently it isn't required to include in the description !
The computer itself upon booting did not immediately recognize my mouse or keyboard, despite being USB.Read more ›
