Excellent portable media player but accessories are needed to get the most out of it, December 19, 2010
This review is from: Dell Inspiron Mini IM10v-USE006AM Obsidian Netbook - 5 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers)
Pros: Highly portable, good media application performance, durable.
Cons: Battery life, awkward trackpad.
Light, small and powerful enough to run almost any media application. Web-browsing (especially via Chrome), eBook reading via Kindle/Nook, Music via Winamp, and video via VLC media player all run well. It's powerful enough to do some light multi-tasking so you can run 2 of those applications at the same time without issue. Any more and you'll probably experience some slowdown.
The wireless card is very sensitive. Even with a weaker source signal I can still surf decently (although streaming videos become a problem.)
Word processing is serviceable. The small screen makes limits the number of lines that get displayed and the small keyboard feels awkward at first. The trackpad is one of my bigger gripes: The pad and sensitivity are good, but the left and right buttons are integrated into the pad itself so bandboxing becomes an issue. Wireless mice - especially those with a nano receiver - will be your the best solution.
Old-school gaming also works. Emulators (ZSNES, MAME) work fine. There are enough USB ports to get a good multiplayer round in. Older 2d PC games also runs, although you may experience some crashing (Alpha Centauri, for example, needs to be set to low resolution 800x600 and have the sound disabled.)
The integrated SD/MMC/Memory Stick port allows it to serve as a sort of mobile data center for more specialized devices (PSPs, digital camera).
There's no optical drive so installing applications will become an issue unless you spring for an external one (about $40)
The 6 cell battery does stick out an extra two off the bottom of the device. Those who want to retain the netbook's sleek, low profile will be bothered by it. I actually thought it was a good design decision. By putting those extra inches on the bottom instead of the back, it provides a nice handhold and it raises the screen up a little when it was set down on a surface. Battery life is an issue, though. My 6 cell at full charge reads 3 hours (although I actually seem to get at least 4 hrs off a full charge)
Durability is solid. I once set it on the roof of my car and forgot that it was still there when I drove off. It slipped off the roof and hit the ground when I was going about 30 MPH. When I turned around to retrieve it, it still worked perfectly. It be fair, it was in a neoprene slip case, so the cushion absorbed most of the shock.
Don't expect it to operate as a full laptop: multi-tasking or heavy computing (Photoshop, video editing, software development, 3d gaming) is generally out. However if you limit its use to a media viewer, you'll be pleased with its performance.

For the price you can't beat it., September 29, 2009
This review is from: Dell Inspiron Mini IM10v-USE006AM Obsidian Netbook - 5 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers)
I've had my Mini 10v for a week or so and I love it. I checked the Dell website and CNET reviews first so the battery issue mentioned in the other review was not a surprise.
The processing power, display and battery life have exceeded my expectations. For somebody just using the internet and using MS works this is a great product, hence my 5 star rating.
There are a few caveats though if you want to do more with this unit. First the screen has a 1024 x 600 resolution. Adobe does not work with a resolution lower than 768. The real problem is that you can't get to the accept button on the license agreement (very annoying). The good news is that the 10v has a VGA port and a decent graphics card, so you can plug in any old monitor to get to the accept button. FYI, Adobe and other programs will work on a 1024 x 600 resolution screen, you just have to use the scroll bar a lot.
Also the lack of a CD/DVD drive is a pain. I borrowed a friends external CD/DVD drive to install MS Office and other software. With large thumb drives available you can get around many data transfer issues.
The end result is that I have a perfectly acceptable, very light laptop with all the features of a much more expensive unit.
Thanks
Mark

Battery Sticks Out!!!, September 22, 2009
This review is from: Dell Inspiron Mini IM10v-USE006AM Obsidian Netbook - 5 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers)
The 6-cell battery sticks out about two inches underneath this netbook, causing it to prop up and not fold flat. I felt deceived when I bought it based off the pictures and the display model, thinking it was nice and flat and sleek. I took it out of the box and immediately wondered what that enormous protrubence under the keyboard was, and realized it's permanent (unless you remove the battery and run off the AC adapter). It can't slide neatly into the side pocket of a briefcase or backpack, which makes it inconvenient. Dell would not help when I called and asked if they could please just send me a 3-cell battery; I would've done an even exchange and not even asked for a refund for the price difference, but they absolutely would not help. I finally convinced the store that I'd been deceived, and they allowed me to return the netbook.
VERY disappointed, with the product and Dell's customer service.
