4.0 out of 5 stars Decent for the Price
Pros:
- The laptop is considerably light for its monitor size.
- It's very attractive and glossy.
- The keyboard has a good tactile response.
- Excellent heat dispersion (so far; it hasn't had time to build up dust or anything)

Cons:
- The glossy finish makes this a fingerprint magnet. Be careful if you're anal about these...

2.0 out of 5 stars The mouse pad is absolutely useless!
Hey Guys,

I bought this directly from Dell, The good things are:

Very light weight - very easy to carry around everywhere
Very thin - Unless you are comparing it to macbook air or something like that, its extremely thin.
Very Fast - the I3 processor is very fast
Perfect Balance of Speed and Mobility - easy to carry around...

This review is from: Dell Inspiron i1464-4382OBK 1464 14-Inch Laptop (Obsidian Black) (Personal Computers)

Be careful if you're anal about these things!
- Intel HD graphics are adequate for productivity, but don't expect cutting-edge gaming.
- Computer ships with OS on separate partition, making file management tedious unless you reinstall yourself.

Detail:
I bought this computer about a week ago as a "mobile hub" for my college career (computer science). In terms of size, this strikes a good chord between functionality and portability. It's considerably lighter than it looks in the pictures, but nothing has a cheap feel to it. The track pad has a nice grain feel to it, and the edges are tapered to give a smooth feel at the corners; it's responsiveness is a little questionable, though. Finally, the computer has a very attractive and clean layout, but its high-gloss design is a real fingerprint magnet. Watch out if you're a neat freak, as you'll be spending a lot of time wiping off smudges.

4.0 out of 5 stars Medium range laptop, April 24, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dell Inspiron i1464-4382OBK 1464 14-Inch Laptop (Obsidian Black) (Personal Computers)
I have this laptop since yesterday. I have had no problem whatsoever with the laptop. I was initially discouraged when I heard that people were having trouble with the touch pad and the media keys, but I personally have not found any tidiousness with them.

Pros:
- Sleek design
- Sound is good
- 4 gb of ram is more than enough to run any program (Corel, Sony Vegas are no biggie)
-The Dell Dock is very productive and efficient, (same or even better than Apple's dock)

Cons:
-Obsidian Black is a finger print magnet. (you will need to clean your laptop almost twice a day)
-I do not know why but microsoft ranged my laptop a 3.2/7.1
-Battery runs out pretty fast. With Win 7 power saver and dells plan as well you could get 3 1/2 hours tops.

I would highly recommend this laptop and I have no regrets on buying it so far.

Had a latitude that died. Bought this laptop to replace it for business use. Biggest probs with it is print spooler continuously shuts off and you have to go thru 5-6 clicks to restart it several times a day. Very frustrating. Called dell support the first week. Was on hold for 45 minutes in the queue waiting for tech help. Once I got a live person (from india) he immed began a hard sell for the 270 dollar warranty package because I neede assTtce with software issues. When I called him on it and said "this is a hardware issue and dell's problem. are you refusing to even hear about the problem in an attempt to sell me something," he promptly hung up on me. I had wasted an hour. Dell support is a joke.

The other issue is the mousepad gets stuck pretty often, either blocking text when I don't intend to--forcing me to lift my hand and do a double tap or right click to turn off the blocking.

Hey Guys,

I bought this directly from Dell, The good things are:

Very light weight - very easy to carry around everywhere
Very thin - Unless you are comparing it to macbook air or something like that, its extremely thin.
Very Fast - the I3 processor is very fast
Perfect Balance of Speed and Mobility - easy to carry around everywhere(Believe me, I do carry this around everywhere. I dont use radio in my car but take this laptop to listen to audio books and podcasts.....Geek all the way...lol)

Here are the negatives:

IMPORTANT UPDATE: I just tried to get some warranty service done, and they make the follow up calls in next couple of days, but they call you around after 10:30 at night. even after i asked them to stop, they called me again at midnight!!!!absolute harassment.
First and FOREMOST - the mouse pad(or finger pad, whatever you would call it) is nto very practical, if your hands have even a bit of moisture or sweat, the mousepad wont respond well. In fact it is so painful that It makes the computer very much less productive than my previous laptop.

The keyboard also seems very crammed. It doesnt respond well, even if I am typing at my normal speed and pressure, sometimes it will miss some characters. I still cant figure out why. Plus all the function keys can only be used if you use it in combination with Fn key.

Battery life: I only get about 2 hours on average. Although if you activate dell's battery saving features, it goes up about 25%.

In Conclusion: For the price, I find it to be a good value if you can tolerate the keyboard and mouse issues. I am trying to get it fixed by dell, but I dont know if they can really do anything. I personally wouldnt recommend it as keyboard and mouse are preety important. but it seems like I am the only one with these problems!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dell Inspiron 1464, June 30, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dell Inspiron i1464-4382OBK 1464 14-Inch Laptop (Obsidian Black) (Personal Computers)
Pros:
Extremely light for its size
Runs much cooler than other notebooks in its class (and given the processor it has)
Easily transportable
Has all the basic connections you will need
Sturdy and durable
Sweet, slim design with glossy looks
Very, very reasonable for the price

Cons:
No bluetooth (unless you really need it, why bother)
Bad partitioning (C'mon Dell, 50GB+ for Windows and the rest as the D drive?). Fortunately the system comes with restore discs (OS and drivers)so just reformat and partition the way you like.

Comments:
As the previous owner of a HP TX tablet notebook that died, I needed something quick to resume my college work. It had to be light yet powerful, with decent graphics and storage and also with wired and wireless connectivity. My research turned up the Acer Aspire 3820 and the Dell Inspiron 1464. While I was fascinated with the Acer, it wasn't available on Amazon as yet and I had no idea of the cost. The nimble little Dell was though and I got it at a great price! I've only had it about six days now, but I must say I am impressed. It handles modern games and HD videos pretty well (kudos to Intel for the integrated graphics), multi-tasking is a breeze (thanks to the Intel i3 core processor), does not run hot no matter the stress I put it through, easy on the eyes (in terms of looks and reading), a 250GB hard drive (I opted for that, other models ship with 500GB) and the price is quite fine. I must say though that the glossy outlook while sexy, is indeed a fingerprint magnet and you'd be best off obtaining one of those micro-fiber cloths to keep it shiny. Other than that, it is a great purchase and one which I highly recommend.

1.0 out of 5 stars Never, ever, ever again..., February 14, 2012

Returned to DELL 5X in first 12 months. Constant power problems with this and the 1545 (returned 4X in first 12 months). They extended my warranties 6 months (they were either in the mail to/from DELL at least that much). One is now a door stop and the other is an e-mail reader, at best. Never had an issue until I bought these two and will NEVER buy a DELL again. I wouldn't take one if it was free...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for business, bad for movies and (4 and a half stars), September 11, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dell Inspiron i1464-4382OBK 1464 14-Inch Laptop (Obsidian Black) (Personal Computers)
This laptop is good for word, business and any office related work. If your a movie watcher it is bad, glitches out in the middle of the movie, the mousepad glitches, the fast acess face recognition barely every works, when the computer starts up it glitches, 2nd month it was pretty bad but after that it is great, nice keyboard, one very horrible thing is battery life, as soon as you get it, make sure you charge the battery then drain it all the way and repeat for the first week or crucial for battery life. Finally pretty good lightweight and definetly smaller than it looks. Wide screen and lot of finger space when typing. Lastly only one huge problem, very bad at multi tasking.

This laptop is very nice looking, very fast, and is what I expected. Reasonable price also. When I purchased the 3 yr warranty, I thought that this was a Dell warranty so we will see how the Square Trade warranty handles things.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Portablity, Attractive Design, June 17, 2010
By
dman977 (Fort Collins, CO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dell Inspiron i1464-4382OBK 1464 14-Inch Laptop (Obsidian Black) (Personal Computers)
Bought mine from Staples for $599. Specs are i3 M330 @ 2.13 GHz, 4 GB RAM, 500GB HD, 14" LED-BL LCD @ 1366 x 768, DVD-R/W

Originally started looking at the ultra-portable laptops (ie. T4400 Pentium & AMD VISION processors) from HP and Toshiba. The kind of laptops with no optical drive and promises of up to 8 hours of battery life. I am glad I decided to go with the Inspiron 1464. The ultra-portables averaged around 1.2-1.4 GHz compared to the 2.13 GHz processor of the 1464. Not to mention the 1464 sports an i3. I have been using the 1464 for a few months now with programs such as Eclipse, Firefox, [...], and DVD Shrink. This processor works really well for basic productivity. I have made it through a 2 hour movie on a full charge, I wouldn't expect any more than that.

Pros:
- i3 - 2.13 Dual Physical Cores = 4 threads (not positive what that means, but it sure means it's fast)
- Beautiful design
- Nice size and weight
- optical DVD-R/W
- keyboard has nice feel
- LED screen (back-lit by LEDs)

Cons:
- Too shiny, attracts fingerprints, screen shows lots of glare
- Have found that USB ports can get in the way at times
- touchpad (fingerpad, mousepad) works perfectly 85% of the time, struggles with scrolling
- backlight has mind of it's own while connecting/disconnecting power (fails to maintain user settings)
- backlight has mind of it's own when UAC (User Account Control, when changing/installing software) dims the screen
- No dedicated GPU (on most i3 models, i3 processors have built-in GPU), this limits graphic's capabilities

Overall, I am satisfied with my decision to go with the Inspiron 1464. Windows 7 is a nice OS but I have yet to realize the full potential of the 64-bit option.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great college notebook, May 28, 2010
This review is from: Dell Inspiron i1464-4382OBK 1464 14-Inch Laptop (Obsidian Black) (Personal Computers)
My parents bought this for me for college. I love the size and the fact that I can easily carry it to class without an overpacked, heavy back pack. It has also been able to handle all of the presentations my professors send me as well as the note taking I type in class.
