I have been having a nightmare with this computer and Dell Company. Computer freezes almost once a day, yet Dell tells me it is a software issue. We have tried restoring etc. But does not work. Tried for a refund but they repeatedly told me they had fixed the problem. No, it still has problems. Now they say the time period has expired. It has been 23 days since they shipped it, but only 15 days I have owned the computer. I spent over 5 hours on the phone with Dell today, and been hung up on 4 times. I will not ever buy from Dell again.

I'm a student, and I was debating between getting a Dell or an Asus EeePC. I went ahead and got this one, because a friend of mine owned the 15z for a bit more.
Here are some pros and cons.

Pros:
-good performance, actually just fine for a laptop this size and price
-relatively long battery life (six hours and 35 minutes)
-I got the black one, I liked the design
-Nice keyboard feel - I type a lot during the day, so the cushy keyboard was nice
Cons:
-The trackpad and buttons are a bit stiff, but not much of a problem unless you use it when gaming
-Lots of dell bloatware. I.e., mcafee security, roxio, and a few others that flood you with popups when you first open the 14z.

This machine has a solid, all metal construction, with the only plastic being the keys and the bezel surrounding the screen. It is quite fast with a 2nd gen core i5 CPU. Keyboard is one of the best I've ever used, compared with Lenovo thinkpad T420. Very satisfied with the screen is bright and clear. Highly recommended!

Bought one of these for someone who is in the IT field and is mobile - he absolutely loves it. I paid $659.99 when I bought it (felt a bit high) but knowing that it does what it needs to do, I have NO remorse.

Great Laptop

Pros:
Nice bright screen.
Great price (50 dollar gift card for a total of 499.99.)
Lightweight.
Great battery.
No flex in keyboard.
Easy access to hard drive.
Aluminum cover (top and around keyboard.)

Cons:
Plastic Bottom.
Second memory module location is located under the keyboard.
No back-lit keyboard (this really isnt a con considering I knew this laptop would not come with one given its lower price.)

Great computer for what is paid. I installed a SSD and eight gigabytes of memory. It is now lightning fast.

. . . if Dell would quit mis-representing the fact that it does not always have a backlit keyboard. Oh wait, they seem to have changed that on their website now--now there is always an option to choose under "BackLit Keyboard" whether or not you really want an actual backlit keyboard. But that was after I got mine with the grey colored, difficult to read keyboard and no backlight. There are numerous reviews on Dell about this mis-representation. They know they have a problem, but they are choosing to make customers angry instead. This is my 3rd Dell Inspiron and my last Dell anything, over them not being able to provide a basic readable keyboard. Not giving Dell a 15% re-stocking fee to return it, so I will live with it and become another customer Dell has lost.

Update: I take that comment back about them fixing the website because it has reverted back to not being able to always choose under "Backlit Keyboard" whether or not you actually want that. I am considering seeing if I can get some kind of small flashlight clip on so I can see my keyboard without turning on ceiling lights. Also the case of this laptop is not like other Dell metal cases, this one is shiny and fingerprints every time you touch it. I refrain from complaining about the color of it like many others on Dell's website have. Whoever decided that door covers over the USB ports was a good idea to make this look really sharp, did not care that it takes 2 hands to plug in a thumb drive.

Sure it works and is a nice size, thin laptop, but to leave off the common conveniences of a visible keyboard and other ease of use items is poor design by Dell, and the advertising is totally misleading. I also was supposed to have 15 months of McAfee on this.... What Dell does not tell you is that there is a dedicated phone number at McAfee to deal with subscription issues with Dell laptops. I had to spend quite a bit of time first in chat sessions with Dell before I got this phone number and then on phone calls to McAfee to get this extended from a 30 day trial to the 15 months I purchased. I found out I only had a 30 day trial when I got an email notice from McAfee that my subscription was expiring. Read more ›
