I chose the ultrabook as I wanted a small, light-weight ultrabook with good battery life AND a DVD-drive as this was to be my main personal machine. There are not that many choices in the 14" space (basically this Dell and a Samsung 5 series).

It has been two days that I have the computer now and I am pretty much satisfied. Booting time is very quick, sleep/wake-up times are reasonably quick for a HDD+SDD machine, the battery life is for the time being more between 3 to 4 hours but I expect this to improve going forward. The power is clearly sufficient for what I need: internet, productivity, films and photos viewing.

Two major and two minor disappointments:
- the machine has only 2 USB ports (one 2.0 and one 3.0). This is clearly not enough given the number of devices that need USB for charging these days
- the machine does not have the context menu ("right-click" key! I would have never thought that possible, as even my netbook Asus 10" PC has one... Yes, you can use the Shift+F10 key to do the same job, but come-on we are in 2012. I guess not that many people use this key but I definitely do
- the PageUp, PageDown, Home and End keys can be activated only using a combination of Fn+arrow keys. Yet again, those used to shortcuts are really slowed down by the absence of dedicated navigation keys
- a quick sleep/wake-up function is one of the great features of modern laptops and therefore should have its own key (or at least Fn+XXX combination). This is not the case; while actually there would have been some space: the F6 and F7 keys do not have Fn functions assigned to them.

I might be a little hard on the machine as I am comparing it with my excellent Lenovo X220 that I have at work: this is a SSD-only machine, quicker to boot and wake-up, with the keyboard and function keys more thought through than the 14z. For example you have keys for microphone mute, etc.

-This laptop is excellent for the traveling professional. It has a large amount of storage space, made snappy by Intel's ingenious idea to use a small, fast SSD as a cache for a large, slow mechanical hard drive.

-It has an excellent battery life; about 5-6 hours of continuous moderate use (browsing the web, word processing, etc.) Less if constantly watching HD video or other intensive applications.

-Capability to play some games, enough to keep you occupied on the road. Should stick with indie or older games for best performance.

I have used this laptop after a clean Windows 7 x64 while multitasking with negligible slow-down. I had 10 browser tabs open in Firefox while burning a CD and copying files to a usb drive while also working in Microsoft word and installing programs in the background. I was also listening to music. The only type of slowdown I noticed was when I reached the cap of the transfer rate for the hard drive. The 1.4ghz processor and the ram were both more than enough for that amount of work. I should also mention that I was doing all of this while on battery power and a nice conservative power plan.

Overall I am very happy with this laptop and all of this is coming from somebody who occupies his time building high end gaming computers. Keep reading if you are interested in technical jargon, if not have a nice day :)

Technical Jargon:
-Intel Smart Response Technology is what makes this laptop so snappy when compared to other laptops with only a mechanical hard drive. It is actually a fancy name for RAID 0. Inside the laptop is a 30GB SSD that is raided with the 500GB 5400rpm HDD. The software that is installed under the OS learns what programs and files are accessed the most, exactly like superfetch.

Every time you switch websites this computer loses connection to the internet. we have 3 other laptops in the house that do not have this issue. The amount of pop ups and ads for "protection" from Dell is maddening to say the least. I'll go back to E-bay next time

This is more of a warning than a review, because I don't have the required motivation to bother listing all the laptop's problems. Short version:

-Can't hold a wi-fi connection
-Terrible battery life. You will need this laptop plugged in at all times if you want to get any work done.
-Low quality touch pad; will sometimes click on its own
-Screen gets dirty very fast because of the laptop's terrible design. Closing the lid will leave an imprint of the keyboard on your screen.

If you're thinking about buying this laptop, don't. You'd probably get more value from playing the lottery. The laptop is very, very cheaply made and not a good deal at all. It's so bad that I feel like I'm bringing dishonor to my family whenever I use it in public.

The most annoying problem is the fact that it drops Wi-Fi consistently, presumably because Dell hired a team of mentally handicapped farm animals to handle the configuration process. In fact, my Wi-Fi actually dropped halfway through this review, and I expect to lose it again in around 20 minutes because apparently Dell never tested this laptop's Internet capabilities. The only reason I have to live with this abomination is because my dad bought it for me to use in college, and he knows next to nothing about technology. Do not make the same mistake my dad did. This laptop isn't just a bad value, it's a bad product in general, and it WILL rustle your jimmies.
