This Dell replaces a 3 year old HP Pavillion dv7. Overall, this Dell is a nice laptop. The core i5 is pretty fast. The 1T drive is huge and there is plenty of RAM. The hard drive is a Western Digital... I have had issues with WD in the past, so I will have to see how long this drive lasts.

Windows 8 is growing on me, although I mainly use the Desktop interface. There is no Start Button in Windows 8, but you can make your own. Here is how:
- Right click the Task Bar
- Select Toolbar -> New toolbar...
- In the File Chooser dialog that appears, Navigate to "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" and click the Select Folder button

You'll now has a pseudo start button.

UPDATE: 2013-11-28

Just a note regarding backups. I ran into an issue after a few weeks after upgrading to 8.1. You can Google the issue, but the problem was that I could no longer create images of the hard drive using the built in Backup tool. 3rd party tools did not work either. Problem caused by the many partitions on the hard drive, and not having enough space on some of the partitions. Hence, the backup failed. Some solutions involved re-sizing the partitions... not for me on a new purchase.

So I wiped out the drive an installed Windows 8.1 Pro. Problem solved.

NOTE: issue is no fault of Dell. It's an OS issue.

Dell Inspiron 17R i17RM-5162sLV 17.3-Inch Laptop is a great laptop for only $629 dollars. I was in the market for a great laptop and this one definitely fits the bill. This laptop is lightweight and thinner than previous versions of the Dell Inspiron. Once you boot up this device you will notice right away the sharp images this laptop can display. The screen is large (17.3") and will allow you to do anything you could do on a desktop. The screen displays at 900p (1600 x 900 ) HD. This laptop is filled with many more great features. I have listed a few that I felt were important for you to know before making a purchase. They are as follows:

• Processor: 4th Gen Intel® Core™ I5-4200,UMA processor
• Display: 17.3 inch LED Backlit Display (The screen is crystal clear, on par with any TV out there)
• Memory (RAM): 8GB 2 DIMM (2x4GB) DDR3L 1600M
• Storage (hard drive): 1TB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive (More than enough space)
• Optical Drive: Tray load DVD Drive

Again I think you will love this laptop like I do and I would definitely recommend it.

Thank you for reading my review, if you have any questions feel free to email me, I would be happy to help you with any questions you have.

This product arrived on time, but will mildly scuffed/damaged.

In general, we are happy with this laptop, though we do have a few issues with it which we will list below. We will start with the cons via the shipping issues and end with the pros.

Cons:
First off, to make this products nature clear, this laptop was ordered from the Amazon Warehouse Deals section. As such we knew it was going to be "repackaged" due to "box damage only." Prior to placing the order, I had talked to an kind Amazon Representative and they assured me that the computer we were going to order "only" had "box damage" and none to the laptop itself. They also started it was fully functions (tested) and came with all the "instructions, warranty information, and accessories." As such, we thought that this would be a good deal since we would just toss the old box anyway and place the computer in a safe cushioned carrying case (also purchased on Amazon). That being said, this computer arrived with mild scuffed damage on the right corning of the laptop. The finish was scratched deep and it was not only very visible, but also disappointing via the representative stating there was no damage to the laptop itself. However, realizing scuffs are inevitable overtime anyway, we decided to keep it.

Second, we were very disappointed with the "repackaging" they did. You would think that in repackaging a new laptop, you would want it to be shipped snug in the box with cushioned material hugging it to ease any impacts upon transportation. This was not the case. Ironically, the laptop was just placed in an oversized box with a small extra piece of cardboard inside. As such, the laptop was free by about 3-5 inches in every direction to bounce around.

If anyone is thinking about getting this laptop, I would say yes. For me, it runs very quickly .Keep in mind though that I don't use this laptop for gaming so I'm not sure how good it will run when it comes to gaming.. But if you just want to do homework, search the web, and watch some videos on YouTube etc. then go for it. The laptop itself has a great look but it is huge so it's not exactly portable. Windows 8 is eh, I don't like it too much so I downloaded the classic Start Menu that was used in Windows 8 so it feels almost exactly like 7.

Our new Dell arrived very timely and was very easy to set up. Very quickly, we noticed that one key was sticking. (e) When you touched it, it continued to put Es across the page until you physically lifted up the key or hit it several times. This made it really impossible to use for writing any text. We contacted tech support and were offered two choices. First, we could take it to a dealer who would repair it or we could return it and get another. We chose to return it. It took a while to get the label and we continued to use the computer. Eventually with enough use and pushing on the key, it did correct itself somewhat. At least we could type. But the touch of that key was harder and it always squeaked when you pushed it. We were glad to get the new one. It took three times as long to get the replacement as it did the first one. Dell support did keep in touch all along the way so we knew we would get the replacement computer eventually. These things happen. We did not like it, but it did not change our opinion of Dell products. The computer works well. It is fast and user friendly. We did not find Windows 8 hard to get used to. It did take a little while to get used to the touch pad not being in the middle of the laptop. Because this model has a number pad to the right of the keyboard, the touch pad is centered on the main keyboard which is a little left of the actual laptop middle. Not a problem now. We also had to get used to not reaching all the right for certain keys. Our old laptop did not have a number pad so just some adjusting was needed.
