Great Printer,

This review is from: Dell LP1700N Network Laser Printer (25ppm, 250 sheet paper tray, 1200x1200 dpi) (Office Product)
This is a great printer. You can find many reviews about it all over the web. I just wanted to mention that the printer only comes with the standard 250 page tray and not with the optional 550 page tray. When I bought this I thought it came with the optional 550 page tray.
You have been warned.

I bought this printer from Amazon in August for $199. It was easy to set up on the network and prints very well. PC Magazine complained about the printing speed being a bit on the slow side- but I do not agree. For a home office or a small business it works just fine. The toner cartridges and drums are MUCH less expensive than the comparable ones from Brother. My Brother printer before this worked just fine but after 20,000 pages I needed to buy a new drum...for $149 if I didn't want an off-brand product! Instead I just bought the new Dell printer!
In regard to the previous review- I TOO bought this under the impression that it came with the 800 sheet tray. I emailed Amazon twice afterwards and in true Amazon style- they told me it was a misprint and simply changed the description/title. It must be nice to advertise one thing and then sell another. But it was still a great deal. I just don't care for the way they handle customer complaints.

SLOW REACTION,

This printer is very slow to print, but once it is started it runs great. The size of this thing is rediculous; my HP 4L took up less space and reaction time was quick. However this printer can take a beating and keep on printing. I have dropped several time from over 3 ft and it is still running. Toner cartridges are a bit expensive and only last 3000 pages.

I've had this printer for about two years now and love it. This was my first laser printer and replace an inkjet I had hooked to a network print server. Is the printer loud ... sure ... I guess, but it's fast and the noise doesn't bother me at all.
Also, I don't think I've ever really had a paper jam. Plus I love that setup is quick in both windows and linux (gentoo). No complaints here.

I bought this printer looking for a good price, but just one year later the printer was not working because of the mechanism to take the paper from the tray was broken, when I contact Dell they recomend me buy another one, because the guaranty have expired. I think this is a very fragile product.

You can stop the irritating pop-up and the several seconds delay by going to Dell's uninstall and chossing only the this item, i cant rememeber what its called but you should be able to recognize it

This is a pretty noisy printer- I don't recommend having sit next to you.
There is a several second delay after one hits "print". I wouldn't care, but an irritating pop-up from Dell comes up and blocks further typing until it dissapears. The main function of the popup seems to be to encourage ordering supplies from Dell.

I bought this Dell to replace my Epson C86, I was sick and tired of paying so much money for ink replacement cartridges, slow sleed from my inkjet and also there is the fact that I hardly ever print a photo or need color, the Dell is extremely fast (compared to my Epson C86) with excellent text output (again compared to my C86) and a very low $1.7 cents cost per page average which is a hell of a lot cheaper than my Epson inkjet. All in all I reccomend this printer highly and advise those who are tired of spending so much money in ink cartridges to switch to laser.

I bought the 1600n - which was the earlier multi-function version.
After four firmware upgrades I still get frequent print errors. The manual feed never aligns correctly. New ink ain't cheap. I would read some critical reviews before I ever buy a Dell printer again.

Its a great printer. But the cartridges are exhorbitantly priced. Refill kits and reloaded carts are available, but they cost as much as buying one from Dell and there's no guarantee that they will work. A new printer can be had for $152, and a 6000 page cartridge is $90. Then there is the drum kit...ah, sorry. Not working for me. I don't like the math.
