5.0 out of 5 stars great pc
This is a great computer. It's small and light and is perfect for my college classes. The top is a little scratched but since it's a refurbished laptop I wasn't expecting it to be in perfect condition. The only downside was that Microsoft Word and other programs weren't already installed but that's just the laziness in me not wanting to take the time to install it myself...

3.0 out of 5 stars Serviceable, but missing a few 21-st century essentials
My employer provided this machine. I find it marginally acceptable, but I would not spend my own money on such a system.

Major misses:

1) It comes with the synaptics touchpad, which defaults to accepting taps as mouse clicks (it should default to the 'suppress taps')

2) Shutdown service takes too long, even for Windows 2000.

3) No option to order with Linux or...

The only downside was that Microsoft Word and other programs weren't already installed but that's just the laziness in me not wanting to take the time to install it myself. I was able to borrow a disc from my friend and install everything I needed the same day I received the comp. All in all it's a great computer. It works wonderfully and as I'm typing this review I'm importing CDs into iTunes so it's a also a great liesure computer as well as a school computer. I would definitly recommend this laptop to everyone.

This review is from: Dell Latitude CPX Notebook (650-MHz Pentium III, 128 MB RAM, 12 GB hard drive) (Personal Computers)

3) No option to order with Linux or without Windows, even though Dell previously touted this feature.

For everyday use, I still gravitate toward my iBook. The Latitude has inadequate USB connectivity (only 1 port), and wastes precious back panel space on a PS/2 style
keyboard/mouse port and a 25-pin parallel port.

Once you plug in a mouse, you have NO USB connectors left for a digital camera or other peripherals. This makes the latitude a niche machine for corporate environments with very specific requirements.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value used., February 12, 2008

This review is from: Dell Latitude CPX Notebook (650-MHz Pentium III, 128 MB RAM, 12 GB hard drive) (Personal Computers)
My company bought the Latitude CpX for $2700 in 2000. It has a PIII 650mhz, 12g HD, 256k ram, with a docking station. The company gave it to me when our location was downsized in 2002. It is now 2008 and I have used it for business ever since and it is a tank. Parts replaced include the keyboard ($20/ part) twice, battery ($30) once, and fan ($20/ part) once. Other than that it runs and runs. Still using Windows 2000 and now I have a Wifi card. I travel throughout the country and it runs great. Sure compared to today's units, it takes longer to boot up and shut down but I can't complain. I am now looking for a used, faster, Dell D610 only because my Outlook file has grown so large (400mb) and my HD is now about 90% full, it takes longer and longer to boot up. Once I delete 8 gigs of my work files off the unit it will be fine. This unit is now going to my son for school.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very serviceable, very, very cheap when bought "used", May 26, 2006

This review is from: Dell Latitude CPX Notebook (650-MHz Pentium III, 128 MB RAM, 12 GB hard drive) (Personal Computers)
Price is everything if you're considering one of these older Dell's in 2006... since decent NEW laptops commonly start at only $500 or so. However, at the right price - I paid under $200, including a memory upgrade and a new battery - the Latitude CPx still does everything 99% of adult users will want to do. It's upgradeable to the latest Windoze XP, it will surf the Internet at the highest speeds your coffee shop or hotel connection can provide, and - except maybe for heavy-duty Photoshop CS2 editing - it will effectively run Office or any other serious software you're likely to have.

The screen is large and sharp. The keyboard is sized for real fingers, not little alien tentacles. If too confining, the single USB port can be finessed with a daisy chain or a USB hub - but how much junk do you lug around all the time, anyway? Those other maligned ports on the Latitude (a SVGA, a serial, a parallel and a DIN mouse/keyboard) are actually pretty useful if you travel without tons of stuff, relying instead on whatever is in your destination's inventory - mice, external projectors, older printers. It works for me, anyway.

So what's not to like? This is the perfect sort of machine to lug around, day-to-day, in places and situations where you might get mugged (say, LA) or crunched (as on a bike.) Just put in a modern wireless card and hit the road.

I was so excited waiting for this notebook to come. My excitement turned to frustration and dismay when I received it and found that it was not as the listing stated. First starters, the harddrive is 5.58GB, not 12GB. The difference in size is a big issue. The body has a crack in it and there is a hole on the side like a piece of it was removed. None of this was listed in the description when I purchased it. The "hole and crack" makes it impossible for me to give to anyone. If there is anything else wrong with it, I don't know because I put it back in the box. The stated issues were enough for me. I had a horrible time with this seller, I ordered a laptop from him for my son for Christmas, it worked for a day, I contacted Leo Systems and he said he was on vacation and not feeling well, he said to have it shipped to his address by January 3rd 2011, I did as he asked and it took 3 weeks to get a replacement after he said he would make sure it was a good working laptop, and he said he felt bad for my son having a bad laptop, and it was his promise to send a new refurbished laptop, or he would fix the one I sent back to him, he sent one back it worked for a few days, After paying for the product and shipping, and then paying the shipping to send it back to him and then getting another one that didn't work, I am very unhappy with this seller!!

4.0 out of 5 stars simple reliable, heavy, expandable device that runs XP just, February 15, 2004

This review is from: Dell Latitude CPX Notebook (650-MHz Pentium III, 128 MB RAM, 12 GB hard drive) (Personal Computers)
siple, reliable, heavy device with big sharp screen....need to upgrade the paltry 128 megs of memory but it runs xp just fine as is... use it for reports at work and home but it has "play potential" with more memory..

Just ordered a linksys wireless access point for my desk top and a card for the laptop so I can cruise the net while lying in bed with my spouse while she watches her murder mysteries... that should be a gas if I get it working and apparrently some folks find it a no-brainer while others run into frustrations. I tehd to have the latter but am tenacious enough to get it set up overr a weekend. If signal strength is good, the potential pf work play outside on a chaise lounge during warm months is worth the small price of admission for this used reconditioned system. The battery only lasts about 20 minutes now but I have an outdooe ground-fault outlet near an old gazebo that is live and safe. Cannot wait !

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorest Customer Service Ever, December 30, 2003

This review is from: Dell Latitude CPX Notebook (650-MHz Pentium III, 128 MB RAM, 12 GB hard drive) (Personal Computers)
I needed to return a Dell computer based on their "so-called" customer satisfaction guarentee. I have now spent 3-4 hours on hold, been hung up on twice, and have talked to approximately 10 very friendly but completly unhelpful Dell customer service employees, none of which seem to speak english as a first language, who have bounced me back and forth from department to department. The only time I actually got through to the Returns Department......their computer was down! Absolutely the poorest service i've encountered in the electronics industry. BUYER BEWARE!
