4.0 out of 5 stars Great for text, width suprisingly useful
I decided on this monitor because of its small pixel size (.24~) compared to others, in the hope that the Text would pop clearly on the screen. In this I am not disappointed. I can read all of my email just fine and very clear and crisp. Also suprisingly my outlook email now shows folder layouts on the left, the list of email headers , then the preview screen which...

Medium priced monitor. Colors and texture are excellent as typical for Dell monitors, "Full high definition", although implies some rewarding qualities, actually means 1920x1080 pixel count (20.5x12 inch in this case). These dimensions feel a bit weird when used as computer monitor, and it is surely not a gaming monitor. It is fixed as only 60Hz refresh rate, which is a...

I decided on this monitor because of its small pixel size (.24~) compared to others, in the hope that the Text would pop clearly on the screen. In this I am not disappointed. I can read all of my email just fine and very clear and crisp. Also suprisingly my outlook email now shows folder layouts on the left, the list of email headers , then the preview screen which accomodates a full browser page, then the to do list summary... all on this one screen due to its width. I admit the monitor sort of looks stretched horizontally, but I find it extrememly useful. It can show 2 browser windows side by side no problem. So far I am very happy. I also use photoshop elements as a hobby and the pictures look great. Not sure about color management settings, etc, but I know that there are expensive monitors with those attributes. I hope my printouts come close to what I see. I took the chance by going inexpensive. But I'll find out in time..really haven't done enough with that yet to tell.. Would recommend to a friend , especially ones that use it mostly for text, data, and web browsing.

5.0 out of 5 stars All-Purpose Good Monitor, July 28, 2009
This review is from: Dell S2209W 22-Inch LCD Widescreen Monitor (Personal Computers)
This monitor can be used for any purpose. I've tested Crysis and other demanding games on it, and there is no problem with the monitor's refresh rate, 60hz. It is usually suggested to use a CRT for gaming, but with newer LCDs I can't see any degrade in performance/appearance (especially with a good brand). Games look great in this HD monitor. Unable to test Blu-Ray, but with Amazon's In-Demand HD movies, I played a sample, and it looked pretty good. Also tested other Hi-Resolution files, and they are very good looking. For viewing movies, normal DVDs just look good enough, seems to be on par with other LCDs.

Concerning DVD quality, it has more to do with the DVD encoding and their native resolution, rather than the monitor. For example, a DVD I tested only had 640x480 resolution, that is fairly low and when upscaled, you can see a lot of compression and artifacts. The problem is amplified by the fact it is a computer monitor, and you are typically a foot or so away, and the compression/artifacts can be seen even more so. CRT and normal CRT TV's will probably look better concerning normal DVDs.

Comes with VGA and DVI cables, driver CD.

The stand is very easy to attach, you don't even need a screwdriver or tools. There is a built in "KEY" that turns and locks it in place. Monitor can be tilted UP/DOWN. If if needs to go LEFT/RIGHT, just move it as you would any TV/Monitor.

Dead-Pixels? NO
Burn-in? NO
Ghosting? NO

I've had no problems with this monitor. Owned for over 1 month.

SIZE
-----------

All widescreen monitors are measured by their Diagonal. So this 22-Inch monitor will have a 22-Inch diagonal.

I measured the actual screen size (not the frame), so in reality it is a little smaller than advertised.

My Measurements:

DIAGONAL = 21.37 inches (21.36878565)
HEIGHT = 10.75 inches
WIDTH = 18.75 inches

When buying online, it is hard to gauge the size. If you're trying to determine which size monitor you want I'd advise making a mockup with paper. Even after visiting a store, you may not be certain how large it will be on your desk.

This is just for approximation. But with the numbers I've listed you could find the size of other monitors you may be looking at using a simple Algebraic ratio equation. For instance, to find the width of a 17 inch monitor:

18.75/21.37 = X/17

In the above equation, you cross-multiply, so 17 multipled by 18.75 = 21.37X.
Except, to make it more accurate you should use whatever the listed diagonal is and multiply by it 21.37 ÷ 22, which is roughly .971.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice color, crisp display, June 2, 2009

This review is from: Dell S2209W 22-Inch LCD Widescreen Monitor (Personal Computers)
Having held out against LCD monitors with great skepticism, I was finally forced to make the change after the failure of my trusty old giant CRT monitor. Part of my resistance to LCDs was the horrible monitor on the fairly new 20-inch IMac that I use at work (the worst computer I've ever had the pleasure to have known, but that's another story).

The Dell monitor is definitely an overall improvement in size, color quality, and wear and tear on the ole' eyeballs. My graphic, video and web development work ranges from Photoshop, InDesign, Quark, Dreamweaver, Flash, AfterEffects, and Premiere. On all of the above, the monitor looks great. I haven't taken the color calibration to the levels of madness that some graphic artists go to (it just seems to be a huge waste of energy - every printing press, every monitor, and every television is off-calibration to some degree; it is frustratingly impossible to get a perfect setting for multimedia.) With very minor tweaking, the Dell was fine for all of my graphic work.

Like most other LCDs, the Dell has a bit of a gradient from top to bottom. The top is somewhat darker, bottom somewhat lighter. It shows up more in saturated colors and deep tones. Perhaps my experience with the worst computer in the world -- the aforementioned IMac -- makes me more tolerant of this monitor. The gradient on the IMac is so severe that I'm often forced to use the Photoshop eyedropper to convince myself that I haven't inadvertently created a gradient in whatever graphic I'm working on. On the Dell, the gradient is a minor issue.

As a newbie to the wide format, my reaction is zoiks! Getting your mouse from the left side to the right side of the display requires a few more inches of sweep. If you're one of the few remaining CRT hangouts, wide screens can actually be oddly disorienting at first. They're just so...wide. The Dell looks beautiful playing movies from DVD. I haven't tested it on any serious games and have no idea how it performs in that respect. Using a Wacom tablet with this monitor is a breeze. It's sharp and precise.

The price of this monitor (under $200) is very reasonable, and overall this is a great buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Monitor /w Correctly Matched Video/Graphics Card, January 29, 2009
This review is from: Dell S2209W 22-Inch LCD Widescreen Monitor (Personal Computers)
I upgraded from a Samsung 19" CRT (SyncMaster 955DF)and was astonished at the quality of the resolution in both text and graphics. I have an older ATI All In Wonder Graphics card and have the S2209w connected via the supplied DVI cable. Extremely impressed with the clarity and quality of the dell monitor.

I paid $189 at Best Buy and will upgrade to the S2409w for the wife's machine.

Excellent monitor for the specs, warranty, price, and quality. Easy choice if you have the right card to "drive" this monitor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect monitor for Photography without breaking the bank!, October 7, 2009
This review is from: Dell S2209W 22-Inch LCD Widescreen Monitor (Personal Computers)
I purchased this monitor to replace my High Gloss LCD monitor because it just did not give me the accurate colors I needed to edit my photography.

This monitor is MUCH better than my previous LCD in EVERY aspect!! For my photography, the matte screen is PERFECT, and the viewing angles are PHENOMENAL!!!

You can see this monitor accurately from ANY angle...Sitting, Standing, to the Side, really low...any angle you choose will give you accurate color rendition!!!

I STRONGLY suggest you purchase this monitor if you do any type of photography, or graphic design! It is SUPER sharp right out of the box, but if there is any adjustment needed, I would say to set your monitor up in the following way...which works great for me.

Color Profile = RGB
Dynamic Contrast = OFF
Display = Graphics
Brightness = 20-30 (it comes out the box at 75, which is really bright...27 works great for me).

Contrast = Default 75 Works great for me. I do all of my editing in a dark room, so these settings are as close to what I saw when I shot my photos, so hopefully, it will be the same for you!!!

Great Monitor...Get one, you will NOT be disappointed!!!

Just make SURE yet get the 2209WA. There is a 2209W, but it is not the same!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dell Monitor, October 14, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dell S2209W 22-Inch LCD Widescreen Monitor (Personal Computers)
I'm very happy with the new Dell flat screen monitor. It's much wider than my old one. I'm so happy that I don't have to keep scrolling over to see the right side of the screen. The monitor takes up less room on my desk, and I like the look of it.
One problem we had was changing the resolution for better graphics. What I have now seems fine, although sometimes it seems a bit faded looking. My husband and I tried to go through the steps to change the resolution, but it was too complicated for us ( we're not that computer savvy.)
I was going to order the same monitor directly from Dell, but when I checked Amazon, I found the price to be less, so I saved money, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dell support, September 21, 2009

I had to get help from Dell for correcting the resolution because my computer is 4 years old. Getting through to Dell regarding monitors is darn near impossible. I was tranferred several times and cut off several times. Finally got it figured out and the end result was worth the aggravation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Huzzah! Works brilliantly with Linux!, November 25, 2009
This review is from: Dell S2209W 22-Inch LCD Widescreen Monitor (Personal Computers)
Upside:
I have several computers, all running Linux, and bought two of these. One for my dedicated home theater PC running Xubuntu (though considering switching to Mythbuntu lately for its excellent support of my Linux supported HDTV tuner card) and this monitor just--WORKED. Right out of the box, as soon as I went to the Display control panel and selected the full resolution of 1920x1080 from the drop-down and applied it.. it blew me away. The dark and black graphics are wonderfully deep, the white are solid and bright. The color palette looks spectacular and accurate! I certainly think this monitor was well--WELL worth every dollar! It worked on everything from my do-it-yourself made tower server all the way down to my Dell Mini9 running Kubuntu. (I tried Karmic Koala 9.10 versions of Xubuntu, Kubuntu and Mythbuntu in all cases--all without problems.)

Downside:
I also tried hooking up a Nintendo Wii using a Wii-to-VGA cable... and although the Wii works flawlessly with my CRT monitors, and (at first) looks breathtakingly PERFECT on this monitor, it suffers from occasional screen blanking which I suspect might be due to being slightly out-of-sync. The Wii is trying to put out a 640x480 progressive at 60Hz, and although this monitor should handle this accurately, it seems as if there's something not quite right and it tries to blank out to sync back up again--at least, that's my guess. I haven't tried it yet, but I ordered and am waiting for a scaler to try out the Wii on the second monitor which I intended to use for gaming.

Summary:
I've only used the VGA connector (I have nothing with DVI output) but it looks absolutely beautiful. I don't recommend using a Wii-to-VGA to play the Wii on it, but then that's a bit of a hack anyway.. otherwise, I have absolutely NOTHING bad to say about this monitor.

3.0 out of 5 stars Photoshop users?, January 2, 2009

Medium priced monitor. Colors and texture are excellent as typical for Dell monitors, "Full high definition", although implies some rewarding qualities, actually means 1920x1080 pixel count (20.5x12 inch in this case). These dimensions feel a bit weird when used as computer monitor, and it is surely not a gaming monitor. It is fixed as only 60Hz refresh rate, which is a barely acceptable frequency for many users, and it is not good for software developers or an accounting office where work is done on a white background. Recommend this monitor for Photoshop users or imaging.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Cut Above - Excellent Monitor for Work and Play, June 1, 2009

This review is from: Dell S2209W 22-Inch LCD Widescreen Monitor (Personal Computers)
This monitor is a cut above the rest...it is high-quality, full HD, and has a clarity and richness of color not found in the cheaper monitors. Don't be fooled by huge monitors that are not 1920 x 1080 but claim to be "high resolution". I used a $50 video that had true HD, and the card recognized the highest resolution automatically and immediately. I bought this at the beginning of 2009, leave it on constantly, use it for work and play, and it is fantastic!
