The keyboard attachment is a definite must have, it's really what makes this tablet stand out from the pack. I'm not sure if it's included on this listing, so be sure to check. With the keyboard attached it's truly a laptop-like experience, the attachment is strong enough to lift it by the keyboard without fear and being able to set it at a wide range of angles is great. It's also much easier to use on your lap than a set-up like the Microsoft Surface, with it's kickstand. I haven't found the barrel on the edge to be a nuisance, but the ergonomics are different than your standard tablet, since the weight isn't evenly distributed. Overall, it's not a light tablet by any means, but it's sturdy and solid.
At this price point it's in the same territory as a Microsoft Surface 3, and that was my other possible option when I chose to buy the Dell. The full windows experience is very tempting, especially from a productivity stand-point, and I'd even say that's the better buy if your primary goal is to replace your laptop. My purpose for the tablet was light productivity (I'm a writer) mixed with traditional tablet usage without the keyboard (reading books and comics, playing some games, etc.).
Maybe it's because I'm so used to Android from my phone and previous tablets, but Android still seems like a better touchscreen OS than Windows 10, and I figured at least half the time I'd be using the tablet without the keyboard, so I went with the Dell.Read more ›
But on to my review:
The great: the screen is OLED, and it's just gorgeous. It makes my Retina iPad look faded and dated. If you're a photographer like I am, you'll really enjoy using this tablet to look over your pictures. Really vibrant (just on the right side of eyeball sizzling!), sharp as heck, bright. Everything you'd want.
The good: It's snappy, and the experience is seamless. I simply logged in with my Google credentials, and everything was nicely set up. (This is not unusual for an Android tablet.) Dell adds a "Gallery" app that wants to use your Google credentials. It wouldn't initialize properly for me, and frankly my interest in yet-another image gallery app is really low – so i skipped it.
Also good: the sound. With the understanding that there's almost no bass (I tried playing The Black-Eyed Peas' BOOM BOOM POW, and it came out as boom boom POW!), the stereo separation and sound quality are a cut above other tablets'. I think it would make a great video player for voice-heavy content – but you'd need some kind of case / holder / whatever to prop it up.
The unit comes with a "3D parallax" background, which means that the background image is in two layers, and the layers move at different rates as the tablet tilts and shifts. Neat effect.Read more ›
What I noticed immediately about this computer is how clear and vibrant the screen is. Since we’re only talking about a 10” screen and because of my failing 50+ year old eyes, this is very important. Except for the round bottom where the keyboard attaches, this computer is very thin. It will not take a regular USB connector, but will take a fast USB connector, so you can pick up a converter if such is your wont. The OS is Android Lollipop, which I was familiar with from my experience with a BLU cell phone. It is a highly graphic interface that is easy to use and fast. Because of the Google-Android connection, it prompts you to log in with a Google account (which I have) on your first pass through and threatens you with reduced functionality if you don’t. It also comes with a ton of pre-installed apps, mostly Google-based stuff like YouTube, Chrome, Google Maps and such. Icons are easily organized, keeping the functionality at a high level for both serious and casual users. I connected to our home network using Wi-Fi, and I downloaded everything from HGTV Watch, to a dippy poker game, to some calorie counting thing that I forget the name of, all in just a few minutes. It was also easy to uninstall apps (goodbye dippy poker game, keep the chips), with just a swipe or two.Read more ›
