Romantic Times Magazine Review

by Julie Michele Gettys
Genre: Contemporary Romance, General Contemporary Romance
RT Rating ****
Della Garland goes from prostitution to being a superb employee at Globe Travel. But her boss keeps passing her over for promotions so she half-heartedly resigns. When he accepts, she's left at loose ends.
Along comes Wes Gates, who unbeknownst to Della and Carrie, is her father. He offers her a job. Carrie, Wes's wife, is extremely jealous of Della, but she has secrets of her own.
Now, the worst thing in the world happens. Della and Stephen, Carrie and Wes's son meet and fall in love. Neither one knows about all the secrets being kept from them. Then tragedy strikes and the secrets come out. Can they overcome all this adversity?
This was a truly marvelous book, one that I highly recommend. (Nov., 304 pp.)

From the Author

"Della" was my first published novel. Since its release, it continues to sell and garner good reviews. It was brought to my attention, there were errors in the eBook, which my editor and I have since fixed. We appreciate these errors being brought to our attention. Many times translating from paper to eBook can be a trying experience.
I enjoyed telling this story, a theme that everyone loves, a rags to riches story of a young woman working to fulfill the American dream. I have two new books on Kindle, "Conflicts of the Heart" and "Cheater".

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific fun -- Highly recommended March 27, 2001
By C. Penn
Determined to overcome her background, spirited Della Garland works had to succeed. Six years at Universal City Globe Travel has allowed her move from entry level to challenging for the promised management position. Unfortunately, twelve-hour days and new business aren't enough to garner the promotion she deserves; and the insults concerning her need for polish concerning clothes and deportment hurt. When her boss Jack Davis calls her bluff, Della hands in the resignation letter, and her boss hustles her unceremoniously out the door.
Jack blackballs Della, and she finds it impossible to find work with another travel agency. Then a call comes from a former client, asking her to work in house handling their travel needs. Suddenly Della finds life flourishing on the fast track. She buries her sordid past in the flurry of the present, learning appropriate clothing rituals and handling her new position with aplomb. Finally everything looks up. Then she finds out the sexy man she's fallen for has a disputable past that threatens everything she's worked so hard to gain.
With a remarkable flair, Julie Gettys presents a novel filled with secrets, deception, lies, and deceit balanced by a rich cast of characters. DELLA is one of those wonderful, spirited novels that move one to tears and compassion even as you cheer the heroine's success. Indeed, DELLA's triumphant finale makes this a novel to treasure. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong, fascinating plot/ great characterizations. January 16, 2001
Della Garland is the daughter of a prostitute and a father she's never met. She only knows that he'd wanted her mother to abort her. She almost follows the same path as her mother, but she manages to turn her life around.Still personal happiness eludes her. Two failed marriages convince her that she cannot trust her judgement where men are concerned. Wes Gates, takes her into his corporation and under his wing and with her hard work and talent, she climbs quickly to a vice-presidency of the corporation. This sets off a chain reaction that culminates in threats, blackmail, jealousy and a forbidden love. Julie Gettys weaves a strong, intriguing plot that keeps one reading. She paints a great picture of the sophisticated world of corporate life and has us cheering for Della to succeed in it. I was particularly pleased, touched by the developing relationship with Della and her estranged mother, Lillian. Lillian is poignant, but most of all a hoot! I loved her!

3.0 out of 5 stars Pathetic drivel. February 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read this because it was a free selection, but I can not recommend it. The characters are unrealistic, shallow, and trite. The story's plot twists? Saw them coming on about page 30. Save your time.

On second thought, I've changed my rating from one to three stars. It's still a terrible story, with unrealistic shallow characters, but being unfamiliar with this genre, I will give it the benefit of the doubt. So many seem to have loved this story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing February 24, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The plot was decent, but the ending was a disappointment. It felt like the writer just got tired of writing or didn't know how to end the story.

Della is a book you can not put down! You are drawn into it the realistic characters of the story. Julie Gettys writing style is different from many other authors. You actually become a part of the story. Best of all just when you think you have it figured out there is another twist. Amazing Julie!!!!! I could see this book becoming a movie on lifetime. Can't wait to read more, please write a continuation of Della's story! Great book!!!!!! This is a MUST read!!!!!!

This book was entertaining, and I think it would be good reading during your commute, or as a beach read. It's not terribly smart, but it's a good story, the plot development is pretty good and the writing is entertaining. I figured out the punchline pretty early (maybe the writer intended it), but it was fun to watch it play out. I generally prefer more developed characters and a thicker plot - but I still like this book for what it is. Quick, entertaining and interesting. It was heartwarming to watch Della grow throughout the book, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant, intelligent romantic thriller December 13, 2000
"There's more to running your own office than being a good worker." With these words, her sexist boss Jack Davis once more refutes Della's wish to manage her own office of Universal City Globe Travel. In a snap decision, Della risks her job - and loses it. Quite unexpectedly, Wes Gates, one of Jack's clients, picks her up and puts her on the fast lane to success in his company.
Della knows nothing about his hidden agenda. Her career soars and her love life is anything but boring. But Carrie, Wes' wife, is perilously jealous and does everything in her power to destroy Della, while Wes is holding back a truth that would dramatically change Della's fate. Ashamed of her past, Della has struggled all her life not to turn out like her mother and thus got trapped in a mesh of disturbing lies that now begin to backfire. The breathtaking plot reaches a superb climax where everything that is dear to Della hangs in the balance.
DELLA is a brilliant achievement that satisfied me on all levels. Julie Gettys, highly acclaimed author of PAST TENSE, has once more created an intelligent romantic thriller with an impressive heroine, a marvelous cast of multidimensional characters and a plot filled with startling surprises. Her style has class, elegance and intensity.
