authentic voice of Chicago blues,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Delmark Records: 45 Years Of Jazz And Blues (Audio CD)
Though Alligator has made many important recordings, to me Delmark Records is the authentic voice of Chicago blues. The "Jazz" disc, featuring Arnett Cobb, Sun Ra, and Cecil Payne, is just a bonus--but catch Malachi Thompson and Dee Alexander on "47th Street."
You'll find many under-recorded blues artists here: Jimmy Burns, Byther Smith, James Wheeler, and Little Sammy Davis to name a few, alongside established blues greats like Magic Sam, Robert Nighthawk, Mighty Joe Young, and Junior Wells. If Alligator is occasionally too slick, these recordings are right on. It's the blues straight into your cerebral cortex, and it doesn't get any better than that--especially at the ridiculously low price of admission. |
