Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Elvis would have loved this toaster. With a brushed-metal finish like a customized '57 Chevy, chrome lift-levers and browning-control knobs, and control dials like old-time radios, it's lovingly and wittily retro. Functionally, however, it's 21st century. Two large slots, each 5-1/2 by 1-1/4 inches, handle bagels, English muffins, and thick gourmet breads as well as conventional bread. Push a button, and bagels or English muffins toast only on one side. Push another button, and frozen bread automatically toasts a little longer to account for defrosting time. Slide open a crumb tray on the side and clean up with no hassle. --Fred Brack

2.0 out of 5 stars Good looks except for those cheap handles, May 2, 2000

This toaster looks great. The matt finish won't show finger prints, wipes clean easily. The old fashioned heat settings are like radio tuner knobs. Nicely made. The settings include "bagel" which means in only heats one side the same as if you broiled a bagel.

Except for one small detail which would drive me nuts. The handles for lowering the toast are the cheapest plastic. They wiggle like they are ready to fall off. It's like they spent all their manufacturing money on the case, the heat knobs, the controls and then said "Whoops! We can't make any money on this, cut the cost somewhere." So the nice handles went and these were slapped on. What were these guys thinking? The part you use the most has the cheapest feel! If I'm buying a top of the line toaster, I'll pay to have it ALL perfect.

But once you actually get this toy plastic model of a toasterin your hands you will be very disappointed. From the photos, and theprice tag, I had reasonable expectations for a retro-industrial heavy-duty piece of machinery, expectations that were dashed as soon as the postman handed me the box - the thing only weighs a few ounces. The lift lever and control dials that look like cast aluminum in the photos are plastic. Even the "Brushed Metallic Finish" housing is so lightweight that it feels like molded plastic sprayed with "metallic" paint. What a rip-off. This item is so chintzy that I'm not even going to plug it in - it's going straight back into the box and shipped back.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just another pretty face, January 13, 2002

This toaster is really good looking. In fact, it is so good looking that we have tried to overlook its shortcomings:

Heats so slowly that the bread dries out.

Pop-up doesn't really pop high enough to easily grab the toast.

Toasts unevenly.

The toaster does have a bagel setting, and that works better than the bread setting. Still, the results are uneven.

We really like toast and bagels in our family, so we're replacing this one.
