4.0 out of 5 stars Not Just Another Pretty Face
I bought this toaster because I'm attracted to retro appliances and it fit well into my kitchen design. Amazingly, it's the best toaster I've ever owned, by far. It accommodates breads and bagels and everything between and toasts them evenly at any setting. It doesn't just sit there and look good...it works.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not expected from (a) toaster
I was disappointed at the quality of this toaster. The handles behaved tentatively, one side sliding down loosely..too loosely, the other too tight. The exterior became very hot, so I would never let a child or anyone whose mind might wander go near this item during or within 10 minutes after use. The interior holding device clamped so tightly, soft bread broke and lodged...

I was disappointed at the quality of this toaster. The handles behaved tentatively, one side sliding down loosely..too loosely, the other too tight. The exterior became very hot, so I would never let a child or anyone whose mind might wander go near this item during or within 10 minutes after use. The interior holding device clamped so tightly, soft bread broke and lodged inside. Any item smaller than a standard piece of white bread had to be handle lifted out, and English muffins still required fingers for removal. The crumb trays are shallow and small, so cleaning must be done after each use. Perhaps I am lazy, but I prefer appliances to serve me, not cater to them. Addendum..11 mos.later, little red 'lights' over control buttons just fell inside toaster.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best toaster and classy as well, May 4, 2003
This review is from: Delonghi RT400 4-Slice Retro Toaster (Kitchen)
We bought this brand toaster in the two slice chrome finish and WOW what a great machine! It is not a light machine but has some weight to it which we like, as well as a non slide bottom

The three button (bagel, defrost, release) are on the one end of the machine and are easy to use and read as well as classy looking. And the toast turns out absolutely perfect!

It is a machine we are proud to have in our kitchen. It is the second machine this company makes (bought their coffee-espresso-cappuccion machine as a gift for my husband) that I have bought and I recommend the maker to anyone who wants a quality product at an excellent price.

2.0 out of 5 stars looks good only, December 14, 2002
By A Customer

Have had unit for several months. Variable settings are a waste since only at max or near max does the bread actually toast. This is second unit having had to return first due defects.
The small plastic indicator lights tend to get pushed in at the slightest bump from any other appliance, so they become worthless (however very pretty when new). Even though we keep ours spotless clean, several bread pieces on one side have started to get stuck almost causing fire. This is precisely what I wanted to avoid from cheaper units and is dangerous. Was great when new and we used only English toasting bread, but quality over time in terrible. Will use as decoration, perhaps with a pole and lamp shade, might be able to sell it at a garage sale as a decorators oddity.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cheap..., July 24, 2000

...in quality, not price.

The brushed-metal looks cheap and the plastic handles complete the impression.

All in all, this looks like a plastic toaster. I passed on it and got the VillaWare Retro 4 Slice toaster instead. The VillaWare's not a Dualit, but it's way better than this thing, for just a little more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrid, March 29, 2003
By A Customer

I gave up and returned mine after a week. It toasted unevenly, the bread wouldn't pop up (had to fish it out with my fingers) and even at the darkest setting, I couldn't get crisp toast.

2.0 out of 5 stars Looks but no guts, October 7, 2005

First off, let me say, this toaster looks very nice and is overall, solid for being made of lightweight plastic.

The controls for heating by side (2 pairs of toaster controls) are nice and important...

When we first opened this a year and a half ago, we were somewhat disapointed by the lightness but quickly got over that because it doesn't really matter, just a 'feeling' about quality.

We used the toaster 2-3 times a month and after playing with the controls could toast fairly well. The wide slots are very nice.

Cons:
As mentioned, you'll have to play with settings by bread type and thickness. This is a light con as most toasters work this way.

The real heavy 'con' is that the unit seams to change it's abilty to read the toasting level which again, sometimes occurs with other toasters.

Real big con:
Warranty is a joke. After 1.5 years one side doesn't want to work and after calling Delonghi, they say it sounds like a sensor issue which is not covered after 1 year.

Nice looks but doesn't last.

Go with Kichten aide with a real warranty!

1.0 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy this toaster, March 21, 2005
This review is from: Delonghi RT400 4-Slice Retro Toaster (Kitchen)
Buyer beware!!! It looks good, but doesn't work. One side of the 4-slice toaster went out after a couple months of having it. We called the 800# that came with it. It took a few calls to reach anyone, we left messages and no one ever got back to us. Finally, we reached a live person and received a service # and address to send the toaster back for repair. After a couple months we called to find out where our toaster was. We left numerous messages and no one ever got back to us. I know they recieved it because they signed for it. Anyway, it's a year later and they still haven't returned our calls or the toaster!! We bought a 4-slice CuisinArt that we're very happy with, but we're out our original $79. Save yourself the agony, don't buy this toaster.
