Routing--the ability to display the best directions from one place or address to another--is one of the most important features of any mapping software package, and Street Atlas USA 7.0 does a good job with the maps it has. It's possible to enter a departure point and a destination and quickly find the shortest route, the fastest route (based on customizable highway and interstate speed limits), or even the most scenic route.
Map detail is another important consideration, and that's where this software really shines. Everything is incredibly legible, thanks to the atlaslike color schemes used; and over three million points of interest, such as shops, restaurants, exits, and hotels, are included to ease travel planning. It is even possible to find all the radio stations in a certain area. The entire United States is represented down to street level in even the tiniest of hamlets, and the information packed onto these CD-ROMs is nothing short of amazing. Even most of the small local lakes we looked at are labeled by name--including lakes on privately owned ranches.
Best of all, this software runs much faster than older versions. Zooming in and out used to be agonizing on our 350 MHz Pentium II test machine, but now redrawing a screen takes only a few seconds, despite the increased level of detail. The only thing we could wish for is a newer set of maps, since this release hasn't kept up well with recent construction, especially in major cities.
The software is compatible with numerous handheld GPS (Global Positioning System) products and also can be used to load maps into a Palm or Windows CE 2.0 device, using the included "lite" version of Solus Basic. All these extra features, coupled with the online software components that let us look at current road closings, weather, and local events (among other things) make Street Atlas USA 7.0 one of the most well-rounded mapping tools on the market. --Tracy Baker
