Delphi NAV-300 Review,
By
This review is from: Delphi NAV300 3.5-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Electronics)
I bought this GPS around Christmas - 2007 for $150. It lists for $399. I had originally ordered another GPS but the store, where I made my purchase, lost my original order. I agreed to accept the Delphi NAV-300 because it was supposedly of equal or greater value.
The good, the NAV-300 does what it is supposed to do. Punch in a destination and it gets you there, as long as the destination is on the GPS map. I was able to find a particular place in Boston, MA that I would never have found without it. It worked well under a mile of road tunnel. The bad, I noticed a few quirks right way. For example, when driving on the interstate, right in the middle of the highway with no exits approaching, it will tell you to, "Now turn left," making it necessary for me to turn the volume down. Another problem with this particular unit is that I have not seen a single map update since I purchased the NAV-300. I noticed recently that the NAV-200 had a map update through a third party vendor for $99. The other day, I went to Gray, Maine and it could not find a road. When traveling a stretch of newly built highway, the GPS went off the map. I am guessing I will have to eventually pay for a new map if I want improved service. This GPS works fine, most of the time, with the existing map but it certainly is worth no more than the $150 that I paid for it, especially if I have to pay a high price for future map updates. I would strongly recommend another brand because it seems that Delphi does not offer maps for any of their GPS units and the NAV-300 is supposed to be a higher-end model. Buyer beware - do not purchase a GPS unless the manufacturer promises, up-front, free map updates for the life of your unit, otherwise, you will be paying down the road (no pun intended).

I've been using this GPS for almost two years. It works well enough, but it appears that bankrupt Delphi will not be supplying map updates. I am a road warrior, and I am already running into problems where the maps are not accurate, or roads are missing. Also, it won't save a destination unless you are on a road, so if you are in a parking lot, down a long driveway, etc, you have to go back to the road to save the location. We purchased a Magellan 1410 for my wife to use, and it has better search features. And it's more compact!
Conclusion: skip this GPS, and buy one from a solid company like Garmin or Magellan.

I received this item as a gift and absolutely LOVE it!! The first thing people should know about ALL GPS systems - is that the unit is only as good as the maps currently in the system. You cannot get accurate turn by turn directions if the map isn't updated. And not all areas will work well with every GPS system. Check with friends and family in locations you will actually use the GPS to confirm mapping for that area. The unit may be extremely accurate in one state but not in another due to new roads, new developments, and/or new communities.
The Delphi 300 works very well and the directions have all been right on the money for me. The voice commands give you ample warning for turns and it even tells if when you are going over the speed limit. It quickly re-routes you if you miss a turn or opt for a different route. You can subscribe to the map updating service and that is probably a good idea REGARDLESS of which GPS you purchase. The monitor is clear and easy to see and read, voice commands are clear and easy to follow, the maps seem to be accurate, and the turn by turn directions have been accurate. I especially like the real time trip estimates. It keeps changing destination arrival time based on traffic and speed traveled. And it stores your trips if you want to keep them in the system for future travel. The touch screen is not overly sensitive and is easy to use. I love this system! I am so glad I have it - and would definitely recommend it.
